Dont Need Concert Hall To Enioy Beautiful Music Luv Cull lac pdtunLtSc of a1 If that same theories uere my umt tell he is giving as good it should and ed tlt of nonsense has been vv lien about supposedly exact positions thlt listeners should take to full benefit from their stereo oils The first thing to remember about this is that even if not placed in what is theoretically the host posxtion In the room good stereo set will give very pleasant and faithful sound reproduction at least as good as monaural set of com parable quality and usually quite bit better The second thing to remember is that while there Is perhaps only one theoretically perfect position to sit in in relation to stereo set in given room there are perhaps half doren or more positions which are so nearl perfect that there is little pracl cal difference LISTENING SPOT Some sound experts who are far too engrossed in their theories will say that the listens or must sit at spot exactly equidistant from both speakers Some will even say the listener must be l2 to 14 feet from the let This may be true in theory but in practice it is sheer pre tontious nonsense and if an ex gcrt ever suggests you should 14 feet from the stereo set ask him what benefit youll lose if you sit only lati feet from he furniture be carried into the concert hall one would be forced to conclude that there was only on ideal seat in the entire hall And yet hall with good accousues can sent 2000 people most of whom are positioned well enough to hear and enjoy the concert with whot seems to them like per feet fidelity At home the average listener can get great enjoyment out of stereo even in fnrlromper fect listening position If an in dividual prefers to sit some where along side wall where he Is closer to one speaker than another adjusting the volume of each set of speakers until they seem to be in balance is all that is necessary GREAT PLEASURE If family and friends are ranged around the room tho speakers cannot be adjusted to give everyone perfect stereo effect but with proper adjust ment most listeners can not some effect and all listeners great deal of pleasure from the high fidelity of the sound The only hardandfast rule to follow is to sit at least as far from the speakers as the dis tance between them That is if the speakers are six feet apart the listener should he at least six feet from each of them The reason for this rule is that the sound from each set of speakers will not merge completely until it has come out lnto the room and despite all talk about separation the listener must really have the sound merged to this extent if it is to repro duce the effect of live concert REAUSIIC if this doesnt seem right think of it this way At an or chestral concert the audience ts always aware of sounds from sligth different parts of the ball but all their sound are nevertheless blended before they reach the human car It is this combination of blending and separation that makes good stereo so realistic For this rea son tho homeowner will also find it unsatisfactory to place mcveoble speakers too for apart The resulting gap makes the sound reproduction seem artiflcinl The need for perfect listening room for stereo has nlso been widely on erated ll thcnew owner of Afi lo tends to place the unit to room containing about as much upholstered furniture carpeting and draperies as the average
