Force Day which will be celebrated in Canada this coming Saturday June 12 the Ground Obser ver Corps Headquarters located at 129 Dunlop Street East will hold open house from am to pm to enable the public to see what is being done in this vital link in the air defence network Under the supervision of F0 Shepherd commanding officer the filter centre will be manned by local volunteers and they will run trial exercise to let visitors see just how the Observer Corps goes into action from the moment an aircraft is first sighted by an ob server until the linal plot is com pleted Somb time ago the Barrie filter centre received call from the surveillance network in connection with two student pilots who were in distress due to their fuel supply running out quickly in the Osh awa area which comes under the jurisdiction of the Barrie filter centre Within very short space of time the centre contacted its lchief observer who is located at the Oshawa Airport This airport does not have lights and as it was night time and the student pilots did not have the experience to land in the dark An immediate call was put through to local ob Iscrvers in Oshawa and they dr0ve Ito the airport placed their cars around the runway and switched on their lights to make flare path enabling the two pilots to land safely isolated incidents where the Ground Observer Corps has alrea dy played an important role in sav ing airmen and their aircraft In addition to the trial exer cise which will be staged at the filter centre on Saturday specially conducted tours will be operated to let the public inspect the build mg Besides training for wartime role of spotting lowflying un friendly aircraft the GOBC is ful filling necessary part in search and rescue work In addition to putting on dis play at the filter centre here ar rangements have also been made for mockup filtercentre to be operated in the Technical Training School at Camp Borden so that the visitors to the RCAIStation thch can also see the work being done by the Corps At Camp Borden the plotting work will be carried out by air cadets of 102 Squadron Barrie These cadets have now completed one years training in Observer Corps work in addition to their regular training It has also just been announced by F0 Shepherd that the tower of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Toronto one of the tallest build ings in the British Empire will now be used by volunteer observ ers who will have reporting cen This is only one of numerousltre located there Excellent Air Show Scheduled By RCAE Station Camp Borden To Mark Annual Air Force Day Highlight of an excellent days program at RCAF Station Camp Borden on Saturday When Canada marks its eighth annual Air Force Day will be spectacular air show with conventional and jet aircraft In common with other RCA taking part stations throughoutVCanada Camp Borden will hold open house from pm until pm and cordial invitation to the public to attend has been ex tended by Group Captain Joh officer The public are reminded how ever that neither RCAF Station Edgar or 13X Depot Angus will be open to the public although both units will be taking part in the displays arranged at Borden Barrie branch of the Womens Institute was prdsent to see the local WI celebrate its 30th anniversary on Monday even ing in Alma Lees Tea Room Mrs Tordiff who is now member of the Painswick branchis the only living charter member of the Institute and as such cut the birthday cake decorated in the blue and gold colorsof the organization at the close of the banquet Mrs Reg Adams the 1954 pres ident appointed clerktreas urer of the Town of Barrie at Special meeting of Town Council on Monday night The appointment was made from list of 28 applicants to choose successor to Barrand who recently was appointed clerk of the City of Oshawa Mr Calder will begin his duties immediately to become acquainted with the operation of the town office but his appointment will be official June 17 the date Mr Bar rand leaves Born in Airdrle Scotland Mr Calder took his CA degreein 1933 He attended Glasgow University where he studied Scots law and economics He spent 17 years in South Ain erica with Price Waterhouse and Company internationally known accounting firm and was later ap pointed chief auditor with the Bel gian firm of Bunk and Bait He emigrated to Canada in the early part of 1952 and has been in private practice as chartered ac countant in Elora For the past two years he has been secretary treasurer of the Fergus Memorial Community Centre Since coming to Canada he has received revaiidation ofhis degree in Ontario as chartered account ant and he also holds his grade Ontario Municipal Auditors license entitling him to conduct the audit of any municipality in Ontario Mr Calder
