Director of Food and MilkContIol Simcoe County Health Unit In Canada today thousands of cows are milked daily to provide youwith your quart of milk your ice cream evaporated and powd ered milk butter cheeseand other products mid you ever stop to think of all the work and precau tions necessary to bring bottle ot milk your door In order to comply with standards laid down by your County Health Unit the job of the dairy farmer is not aj Asimple one For the hundreds of milk producers in Simcoe County an exacting schedule must be fol lOwed to ensure delivery of clean wholesome and safe product to the pasteurizauonplant First we start with the cow who has been described as the foster mother of mankind Years of selective breeding have made it possible for the better herds of today to produce three to three and one half gallons of milkper day per cow during the 300 day milking period This milk is highly nutritious It contains most of the minerals and vitamins needed for the growm and devel 0pment oi the normal human body Milk is such good food that we must competewith bacteria yeasts we are to have good safe milk and milk products The the dairyman is to outwit these tiny organisms which en deavor to reach the milk and keep them out or destroy them The dairymansfirst line of defence is healthy cows clean comfort able environment defence against disease balanced diet and even keeping the cows happy are im portant factors in cow health The modemcow by centuries of breeding has been encouraged in every way to produce maximum amount of milk It is not surprising that the sensitive and highly spe cialized milk producing organs are 50 prone toyinjury and infection This infection called lldastitis is the ans bugbear Because milk produced by infested cows is inferior both inquality and quant ity the prevention of injury and infection is highly essential calls for the practice of rigid san itation and careful milking habits nd cow tuberculosis Thanks to success ul control program by the Federal Depantment of Agriculture herds in Sinlcoe County are almost en tirely free from this disease but precautionary measures continue Dairy herds are tested regularly and all suspected or diseased cattle eliminated The third important disease in dairy cattle is Brucellosis or Bangs Disease This disease like tuber culosis can be transmitted to man through raw milk as Well as be It is great economic problem as well as health problem and the farmer inust constantly on guard to gprevent its This health problem is introduction into his herd Frequent testing and the re moval of infected animals may be necessary All milk supplied to dairies in Simcoe County isvcheck ed monthly for Brucellosis and to datewell over 8000 herd tests have been carried out This en ables the dairy farmer to keep ar check on his herd from month to month The milk producers precautions Only begin with healthy cows He must ensure that they stay healthy by providing clean comfortable surroundings by the daily removal of manure and the addition of clean straw for bedding Cows are creatures of habit and once daily routine for milking has been established the dairyman must stick to it No holiday for him as the cows must be milked twice daily the year round The milking procedure is an exacting one All utensils that come in con tact with the milk must be kept scrupulously clean they must be sterilized before use twice daily and rinsed and washed after each use Even the udderof the cow is washed with sterilizing solution before the milker is supplied Fol lowing milking the milk is strain ed and immediately cooled to 50=F orlower and held at this tempera ture until delivery to the pasteur ization plant gerhaps the most essential fac tors inproducing quality milk are the dairyman and his family Their health and habits are the strongest link in the chain which protects our milk supply What is the dairymans reward for producing quality milk Top prices in permanent market for good weed control by following such good farm practices as crop rotation maintaining soil fertility growing of smother crops mowing or cut ting or otherwise preventing weeds from going to seed sowing only pure seed and pasturing of sheep etc have not been replaced and probably never will be but the control of weeds has been greatly assisted by the introduction of chemicals great advances have been made during the past 10 years in the de velopment of new chemicals for weed control purposes and the results from the application of these chemicals have proved that there is very definitely place for the use of chemicals in the weed control program of every municipality or individual Weeds and brush along streets or Aroadsides can be more econom ically controlled by the application ofchemicals than by cutting or mowing and with more permanent results similarly weeds in crops or pasture fieldscanbe controlled at very small cost per acre with out causing any damage to either the growingcrop or the pasture by usingone or other of the selec tive weed chemicalsnow on the market which when applied at the proven rate per acre will either completely destroy or at least prevent from seeding all weeds depending upon their varif ety without damaging or hinder ing but on the other hand increas ing the growth and yield of the crop as the result of having the weed which otherwise would have robbed the useful plant of sunlight plant food or moisture either stunted or completely killed The effect of chemicals on dif ferent types of weeds and brush have been successfully demonstrat ed at manydifferent locations in Simcoe County dpring the past five or six years and as result of seeing or reading of these dem onstrations number of the farm ers in the county have purchased Sprayers primarily for adopting chemical weed control program on their own farms But some have as well found time to do bit of custom spraying for neighbors who have seen the results and wished CASE Sales 321 Service BOLENS highly the careful thought Forum members are giving to agricultural problems OUTLINE OF BEEF CATTLE INDUSTRY By IVARNICA ls VicePresident Canadian Council Beet Producers As beef cattle prices have con tinued to go down since the be ginning oi 1952 would like to present report on what is being done in the interests of the in dustry After foot and mouth disease broke out in Canada the producers asked and received support from the Federal Government The government purchased surplus meat and through agreements with Britain New Zealand and the United States moved part of the of the day tor out of the opinions expressed at Farm Forum on Mon day nights come the Seed gem of Federation policy We need the participation of every last Ontario farmer in Farm Forum and the Federation of Agriculture if our farm organizations are to be truly democratic SIMCOE MOTOR PRODUCTS LIMITED APRIL SIILE 1952 GMC 12 TON PICKUP One owner Heater air conditioning Deluxe cab like new surplus the beer purchased period has all been sold and is out of Canada In June of 1953 the cattle market again became overloaded and no market seemed possible the USA markets being also flooded with beer Again the Bee Producers Association studied the situation went to Ottawa and eventually the producers the government and the trade in co0perauon evolved the idea that it the pork market could be well cleared all thc beef could then be consumed in Canada good market was developed in the United States for hams backs and breakfast bacon which resulted in very strong market for pork and eventually making market for the surplus beef in Canada By working together both the bee and pork industries were saved from disastrous situation The picture now seems to have brighter side in that the USA reports that it is expected there will be shortage of ï¬rst quality finished steers about the 15th of without doubt am glad to report that May and through June This we through this arc certain will favorably affect the Canadian market and we are looking or reasonably steady market as result showing some strength as the USA becomes short of quality beef The Bee Producers of Canada have studied the whole meat situa tion for several years and are con vinced that publicity and educa tional policy should be put into operation and that now is the time to start With this thought in mind constitution and an organ ization is being planned or the above purpose To ï¬nance it it is purposes that avoluntary deduc tion of five cents per head be taken on all cattle going to stock yards or packing plants for sale This is very small amount tor each of us but when totalled across Canada we are sure It will get the plan into action Meetings are being held in each county Ontario to tell the producers about the details the plan and to receive their comment which will be helpful 1949 GMC 12 Ton Panel 89 I946 FlillGflnm wmmw 525°° 1948 GMC V2 Ton Panel 3675 1947 GMT 1947 FARGO SPECIAL NOTE Motorists of Simcoe County take
