Canada OTTAWA Spring wheat was one of the first and most import ant crops grown by the early set tlers when the country which now comprises Eastern Canada was dis covered De Monts planted this crop at Annapolis in 1005 while Louis Hebert reports abundant wheat crops on his farm in Quebec City in 1635 The Red Fife wnca which gave Canada its first reputation as wheat producing nation as well as the world famous Marquis wheat were originated and developed in Ontario All the Eastern provinces provided the wheat for their own bread making purposes and num erous small flour or grist mills were to be found in each province With tire expansion of the wheat areas in the West and the increase in population the larger better equipped and more efficient flour mills took over the manufacture of flour and many of the small mills closed down which lowered the demand fOr local wheat Dur ing the past twenty years the wheat acreage in Eastern Canada dropped from 204700 acres in 1934 to 54400 acres by 1953 This decline shrted previous to World War II when large stocks of wheat were available in the Went and prices were so low that Eastern farmers found it cheaper to bring in grain for feed purposes than to grow it There are occasions however when it pays to raise wheat in preference to other crops One good illustration of this is in the potato growing areas where the heavy applications of commercial fertilizer cause severe lodging to such crops as oats and barley when Sown on these soils following potatoes It has been found that good variety of spring wheat will stand up well under these conditions and produce excellent yields The new Acadia wheat with its short stiff straw could be used to advantage in this case Carl Fraser cereal crops divi sion Central Experimental Farm Ottawa reports on survey just completed on how Acadia wheat behaved under general farm con ditions in Eastern Canada during the past season Yields as high as 45 to 50 bushels per acre re corded with an average for the 100 farmers reporting on their yields of 2575 bushels per acre This is very good considering that the average yield for the past ï¬ve years for spring wheat in Canada was 164 bushels and even in the bumper year of 1952 the yield was only 263 bushels per acre In other words Eastern Canada can 95 MASSEYHARRIS AND FERGUSON DEALER 30 Sophia st at top Lower photograph shows
