Thus It Was Dear Reader nnminu cm Editor Through John Miliward 44 Donald street Barrie who in turn received them from Wilfridlovers of Hamilton we have been perusing two letters writ mmnxempenmrrï¬ssï¬nm Both were written to Mr Lavers paternal great grandmother Ellis in Yealmpton near Plymouth England by her brother William Mann Their yellowed pages give an interesting insight into life in thisarea more than century ago Here are some excerpts from one of them Kempenfelt Near Barrie My Dear sister January 15 1848 young man going from this part to England tomorrow morning and knowing the expense of postage induces me to set down to write you once more Since the receipt of your letter my dear Betsy we have been thinking it would be great deal better for you andyour family to come out to can add feel certain it would be to your advantage Your girls would soon get comfortably married and settled in life Caleb could take farm or further more purchase one of your own The impression hi my mind is that you would never regret it If you take this advice and come out write on receipt of this and will endeavor to seek out farm for you have been thinking also just now that it would be considerably to your advantage as Lady Elgin the Wife of our Governor General Lord El gin is niece to Lady Buttlet who would no doubt send with you strong recommendations DOMESTIC TONE No doubt the dread of crossing the great Atlantic is dreadful in anticipation but then it is only like taking dose of medicine unpleasant for few hours but gives domestic tone to our constitution What is surprising to me is that thousands more of the industrial and teeming population of England groaning under heavy rents and burdensome taxat ion with the great competition of productive ia bour dont leave This one ends with Believe Me To Be Your Affect Brother Wm Mann Irater at the age of 60 Mr Mann becomes some what more flowery when he writes from Barrie in 1856 After an effusive opening which in these days would seem bit much he comments Nothing more would offer me so much felicity as to see the place that gave me birth If the Lord should so spare my life within two years anticipate the happiness of seeing you all but at present am immersed in Business that should have to give up great deal beiore could be spared to visit my native land have been engaged in building house for my son who iscarrylng on mercantile business which will cost me £400 although business this summer dull has been exceedingly on the whole my three children are doing well in business and their character islrreprdach able but amsorryeto say only one my daughter lives in the practicable enjoyment of religion but our prayers are daily ascending the throne of grace on this behalf and Idont despair
