1AM EXAMINER ramav am 1m THE GREAT OUTDOORS by worm sums GRAND WEEKEND We wont talk about the fish which we caught last weekend but we would like to say that Camp Opimlka is afabulous spot and provided wonderful time in spite of few minor probians Oneof the funniest things that happened was the fact that most of the fellows arrived in camp complete with electric shavers from force of habit knowing full well that there was no electricity available The drive from Thorne Ontario to the camp is an experience that we will long remember We estimated that it would take about half an hour in spite of what we had heard about the condition of the roads We took exactly three and half hours making this part of the journey at night on the way in and the best part of two hours coming out in daylight hours One could not adequately describe the road but suffice it to say that your columnist has often said that he would literally crawl over broken glass to get to good fishing waters and after driving that 22 miles rocky washedout bush trail with wellladen car with the passengers getting out and walking up and down of the most dangerous and steepest park we feel tba have experienced the greatest test which we have ever ha in this department Due to the unseasoaable weather the fishing was not up to expectations but it did start to pick up the morning which we broke camp wouldnt you know it Jim Morley Ken Baldwili Al fhurlow and Charley Kearscy were getting ready to break camp after spending week at Opimika Camp the day after we arrived and they reported moderate success The people who run Opimika Don and Mrs Barnett are grand and do all in dieir power to help one oy the SW The camp is ideally situated within range of done of grand little lakes to width the hornets direct youand provide bouts These lakes are all cold spring lakes varying inlsize but all fairly deep You can fly into Emerald or you um drive into the Camp providing you have very good nerves and the proper type of vehicle with which to cope with the rough and danger ous terrain INTERESTING MEETING Last Monday evening proved to be most interutmg at the regular dinner meeting of the Barrie District Anglers and Hunters Conservation Club Many committee reporLs all of which were highly interesting and very well reported were pruealed Bill Stewarts report on Club activities for the past year would have been real eye opener to most people who collid have had the pleasure of hearing it It would have given one an id eat the wide scope of Conservation activities carried on by this ub in this area Jim Harris in reporting on Hunter Safety made men tion that anyonalnterested in Hunters Safety Courses should praent themselvs at the Aiiandale Orange Hall at 701pm on Friday September 21 The club voted funds towards the purchase of new trophy to be named The Lloyd Cook Trophy in honour of the hardworking local conservationist youth worker especially with Boy Scouts andcharterunembpr otjtheClub This trophy will be presented to the Boy Scout Thaioy for the greatest Proficiency InMariBrnanshlp and Woodcraft and will be up for annual competition Lloyd thabked the club tor the honour and mentioned that he sincerely liked working with boys He said that in his estua ation there were no bad boysgbubrafher boys who were mIs tnrected We think everyone got his point that buys dofineed our help and guidance we agree with himthere are no bad boys unb they are neglected or misdirected We can think of no more rewarding work than that of working withboys and staying fang with them trying to guide them into being more useftu Anotber interuting announcement wx that of the coming Zone Meeting of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters which will be held in Barrie on October 2223 The weekéiid will include intermting conservation business and agrand dinner and dance at the Canadian Legion all Conservation Club members please note LIVELY DEBATE motion regarding Sunday hunting on Crown Lanrk only during the open season provided some discmsion After lot of discussion both Pro and Con the motion was passed with one member abstaining It was pointed out that it is unfair the open season is allowed in the Nor but not in the Southerly area We think that we can appreciate the feeling of fellows who have to lay around to their own devices on Sundays during the hunting season knowing full well that other hunters few miles north ofthemarahunting legally in all fairness this whole subject requires lot of serioiu consideration Tile motion wu made by fellow who is really hardworking practising conservationist and one who 11km to live within the law but does not appreciate exceptions or ways around the law Wecan forsee the problems ofallowing hunting on Sundays in the vicinity of builtup highlypopulated areas but then when you consider that the motion states Crown Lands the whole thing take on different perspective It will be interns ngto see this motion faraaat various levels and the discussions which it will generate This motion has only passed through the local club and has along way in go but it will provide good bit of lively debate and speculation
