the arric Examiner Published by Canadian Newspapers Ltd 16 Hayfield street Barrie Ontario PAGE F0 UR SATURDAY AUGUST 1m EDITORIAL Is Barrie Suitable City For Holiday Centre The complaint recently voiced by motel owners of this city that there ls nothing to attract andkeep holiday visitors in Barrie is unfortunately very true One day smpovers do not make holiday crowd The main street packed as it was one day last week may be good for local business but it can still mean the motels are empty Those that swell the local shopping crowd on an inclement day come from cottages and shores outside Barrie It will not be like that always for there are those who are working to add some attractions to this city to make it worthy holiday centre The Chamber of Commerce still has in mind the recon struction of Fort Willow as tourist at traction but it takes time and money Plans for lakeshore park and drive suitable setting for band shell and an adequately guarded pool are advanc ing slowly It takes time and money Incorporated in the above scheme is plan for boat marina an obvious necessity On Naming Few people are immune to the magic of placenames Some of these such as Samarkand and Vallombrosa are music al in themselves and their poetical or historical associations only enhance their magic Others such as Rome Paris or London depend for their spell simply on their history With others particular ly in England it is the quaintness that attracts Witness Stoke Pogea or Chip ping Campden Canada is fortunate in having place names of all types musical quaint his torical and commonplace The musical names have not been widely recognized because they are unknown to the world at large and not well known to Canad ians themselves The banks of the Sas katchewan were immortalized in mus ical comedy song many years ago but other parts of Canada remain unsung Yet who is to say that the native of Samarkand may not have romantic dreams of Pohenagamooke PQ Canadas historical names are often derived from the history of other count ries It must have been an admirer of Lord Nelson who named three places in The question is how long can Barrie afford in wait for all this to develop Will it be too late when the schemes are completed Will Barrie have been bli passed as holiday centre in favor of Orillia Midland or Gravenhurst Perhaps this is the most logical con clusion Let us forget about ourselves as holiday centre for city folks do not want to go tocitles for relaxation Let us concentrate on improving our facul ties with as much haste as we can afford but lei us drop the idea that we can offer any attractions for those who seek brief respite from the humdrum rou tlne of life If we accept this view as community then motel owners must be prepared to find their living from the traveller who stops just the night and moves on Their financial salvotion may lie in promoting adequate facilities for mailer type con vmtlonsanother aSpECt of trade for which Barrie is totally unprepared at the present time Yet the convention trade can be as profitable to community as the hall day trade Communities Halton County Ont Palermo Bronte and Trafalgar the name of nearby Hamilton is just coincidence strong religious feeling may have suggested the naming of New Jerusalem NB What feeling if any lay behind the naming of Coboconk Ont Religious feeling is also evident in the great number of communities named af ter saints Nearly all the saints in the calendar must be represented One un doubtedly Welsh in origin is St Jones Within Nfld The date and occasion of his canonization are not available in any handy book of reference The trail of the homesick Scot may be traced across the map of Canada from New Edinburgh NS to File 80 There are three places named New Glasgow one in Prince Edward Island one in ND va Scotia and one in Quebec There are quaint names in plenty Pos sibly the inhabitants of the places call ed Quaw 130 and Witless Bay Nfld are so used to them that the names sound commonplace but to the outsider they will suggest curious stories lying behind them What about Carrot River Sash Opinions of Other Newspapers FLUORIDES BY DOSE the brewers that their product which they deem the lesser of the two evilsl reduces the consumption of hard liquor Their contention is of course that liquor is worse for mankind than the sudsy product There are those researchers however will warn that beer contains something very akin to hash ish the deadly oriental drug But be that as it may the Wall Street Journal says that liquor men are
