legislatures select committee on drugs costs heard opinions from Ontario doctors Wednesday and got mixed report on the feel ings of the medical profession about drug prices The committee heard that The Ontario Hospital Services Commission plan has made ex pensive drugs available at nu extra cost to patients who need them and has resultedin better patient care That doctors should not pre scribe an expensive pill in cases where one cent tablet would have the same eflectiveness And that many doctors have no idea of the cost of the drugs they prescribe BILL IS HIGHER Dr Ian Urquhart chairman of the hospital services commission said the provinces 153 public hospitals drugs in 1959 an increase of 18 per cent over 1958 But total patient days in 1959 when the hospital plan began rose 67 per cent over the provis ous year accounting for part of the increased cost The balance of the increase indicated patients were getting more expensive drugs when they needed them he said Dr Frank Brien oi
