existing barns from the conventional stall type in loose housing has proven quite pop ular Willi beef cattle producers for quite number of years but the adaption of the loose hous ing system of stabling for the dairy herd is still much de bated topic among dairy farm ers recent Study of loose pen barns on farms enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement As sociation by the Farfn Econ omics and Statistics Branch of the Ontario Department of Ag riculture has just been releas ed and this report throws quite bit Of new light on the sub ject Some 60 dairy cattle barns with pen type stabling were compared with more than 1000 with stall type barns and both kinds were found to have special advant ages and disadvantages ADVANTAGES OF IJOOSE PENS Fortyeight out of so noticed marked improvement in the health of their herd four said the health was unchanged and no one noticed any decline in healtll Improvements in the health 11 the herd were listed as fol lows Less mastitis no case of Ketosis less udder trouble better conception rate others listed increase in productive life of the cows higher production less drop in production and less ditcstivc roublcs when changing feeds Nineteen listed reductionI in labor requirements in spite of increased herd size Others mentioned better manure cleaner milk and case in handl ing milk DISADVANTAGES Many found they had insuf ficient straw for loose pens This was real problem in some areas Some used shav ings sawdust or corn cubs in holding areas or in the door ways to supplement straw The rough appearance of the cows in the winter is not at tractive to buyers Two said the cows liked the fresh air but they didnt Six mentioned the poor state of the yard in the spring Separate yards should be constructed for young stock The survey revealed wide variety of pen arrangementp feeding methods and milking procedures Despitc the wide variety all seemed to be oper ated with considerable de gree of success There is strong indication that the de gree of success was more dependent on the ability of the operatonto adjust to the var ious combinations of methods than on the merits of the com binations Summing up this report it would appear that most of the cooperaturs who had changed over from stall type to loose pen stahling were well satis fied with results There were number of reasons for mak ing thc change Some wished to increase their hcrd others considered their old barn warn ln the spring and fall thought the loose housing would represent consider able saving in chore time as cost of steel stanchions PAY TO CHANGE On the other hand it is doubtful if dairy farmer who has well planned stall type barn large enough for his pre sent purpose would find it would pay him to change over to loose housing at the present time Most farmers who feature the sale of breeding stock pre fer the stall type barn as they feel the herd can be shown off to much better advantage when tied up in orderly rows When consi ring change to loose housing we should at so keep in mind the problem of obtaining adequate bedding supplies Much less straw is produced on our farms today as our grain acreage keeps shrinking and with the in creased use of the combine for threshing we save less of the straw we do have than in form er years Shorter strnwed var ieties of grain are also being introduced as more suitable to combining and present day methods of cropping It is of course usuallv possible to buy straw at price but some times thc price is high For example there were occasions last winter when baled straw good baled bay This study of various types of dairy barns will be continued RETIRES AFTER 43 out well as eliminating most of the cost more per ton than fairly Mr and Mrs Robert Wilson 69 McDonald Street are pictured on the
