Wood bine race track was almost as close to Barrie as the eastern parts of Metropolitan Toronto we had the notion that our read era should have direct story on Canadas 101yearold race the Queens Plate visit to the press gallery at this track is an experience we enjoyed during the visit of the Queen last year but we feel we owe someone debt of gratitude that this year we were down among the people One certainly sees the races in different light when surrounded by the ordinary Joes and Josephines The Queens Plate is not only the oldest Canadian race being annually run it is also the most remunerative for the winner Be sides the 50 guineas from the Queen the purse will amount to over $60000 exclusive of any wagers won by the various own ers For the first 20 years the 50 gulneas was the total purse received To be entered in the race horse must he Canadian foal ed threeyearold subscrip tion at 525 must accompany each nomination by December two years previous to the race second subscription of $50 by December of the year previous to the race and third sub scription of $100 by May the year of the race with an additional $500 within two days before the race Fillies for whom entry has been made on May of the race year may complete the entry up on payment of the sum of $100 FOR THE WINNER The winning horse receives the 60 guineas plus 50 per cent of the added money The Second place horse receives 25 per cent of the added money third place l5 par cent and fourth place it per cent gold cup is award ed the owner of the winner with mementoes to the trainer and rider Of the ill nominations last December 98 remained eligible by Dec and 48 remained eligible by May of this year There Were eight horses in the race their names and numbers being as follows No Hidden troop of tho GovernorGenerals Horse Guards was thrilling sight The GovcmorGeneral performs traditional function on Queens Plate day by presenting Her Ma icstys personal gift to the own er of the winning horse DENSE CROIVDS The neural running of the Queens Plate was the seventh race and the preceding card had given the crowds lot of fun as we heard from some $2 specu lators who had cleaned up some long adds We did not partici pate in the betting previous to the main race as the dense crowds swarming around the wickets made it much easier to just bet with yourself and see how wrong you could be It was almost impossible to get to refreshment stand Standing in the grounds in trout of the grandstand and look ing up at the galleries of people in the seats three decks high was an impressive sight But not more than half of them were in the grandstand seats The lawns were covered with spectators and seats there were at prem ium with guard posted if they left to place bet or line up at the refreshment stands hundred acres would not have parked all the vehicles We counted more than 100 buses awaiting the call to transport people who had left their cars at home We arrived after the second race and had to park in one of the outlying areas transportation system such as is used at the plowing match brought you to the gate but this was not in evidence when one was ready to go home so one had chance to realize how far out he had parked The only race track at which we believe we ever saw larger crowdwasatE mannsin Coronation Year We covered this event for the Ontario weekly newspapers and officials at Ep som were most courteous in see ing that we had place in their press gallery even though we were only writing story for some country papers far across the sea That gallery was sep arated from the Royal Box by only glass partition and the newly crowned Queen was pleasing sight to watch in her enthusiasm for the race We remember ahc pounded the back of her husband as the hors es rounded the last turn with her horse coming in second Toronto uowds are pikers when it comes to total up the betting We have seen bet total at some of the Florida tracks that would malts that at Woodbine Queens Plate race and all look like peanuts Perhaps we did not do our share to make this much better We came home with an uncashed $10 quinella ticket on which we had changed horses at the last minute before placing the bet We listened to couple in the lineup discussing the placing There was little doubt but one should place Victoria Park first but which horse second was the problem We lined up at the litspat wicket because this was the one being used least the others having long lineups We intended placing our bet on Vic toria Park as first and Quintain for second place whichturned out later to be the right choice But our informants showed each other that by taking No Ilidlt den Treasure you also Included in your chance the 1A Cham pagne Velvet When the race came in we were near the wire and trying to get picture of the winner who came in so fast we think we missed him However we and the crowd nearby were sure that had been second which would have made our ticket worth about $25 to $1 How ever photo finish proved that No horse was second We still have our souvenir ticket We did not place any other bets so when we consider that we had couple of passes for the grounds one of which we did not use we were not out too much anyway The winner came in far ahead of his competitors The other horses were well hunched and showed just how superior was this Canadian horse to his run ning mates Just what gives horse such exceptional ability to spurt ahead of others and lead field is more than most car parts will say He has shown promise of this In his short rnclt ing history and there is little doubt that from now on he will be leader We can only wish him success and mayhe bring the pride of Canadians along with him as he goes BETTORS ARE EDUCATE The people who attend the rac es at Toronto are the most edu cated we have seen at any track They study the program and the racing form and every manjack and his partner knows the re cord of every animal that runs and the jockeys that ride them it is wonder that track of ficials can come out even in their Operations One doesnt have be ask ques tions just stand near any group and listen
