Oakville poet publishes latest collection Oakville author Laurence Hutchman recently released his latest collection of poems on his favourite artists and writers. The collection, titled Personal Encounters, contain poems about poets who helped shape him, such as Li Po, R. M. Rilke, Iriving Layton and Leonard Cohen, and artists, including his wife Eva Kolacz, who also provided the cover art for the book. "Unexpected people that we meet, situations that we find ourselves in, and objects that we discover often change us," Hutchman said of his latest collection of poetry. A resident of Oakville with his wife for the past year and a half, Hutchman grew up in Toront. After his first year at university, he spent two years in Ireland, England, Holland and travelling around Europe. He has studied at the University of Western Ontario, Concordia University and the Université de Moncton, and has taught at several universities. After teaching for 23 years at the Université de Moncton in Edmundston, N.B., Hutchman retired in 2013 to concentrate on his writing. He also co-edited Coastlines: The Poetry of Atlantic Canada and edited In the Writers' Words: Conversations with Eight Canadian Poets. Personal Encounters is available at Amazon and Chapters. Art from the Heart opens tomorrow The Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre (JCHAC) wants residents to see Art from the Heart, which opens Friday (Jan. 30). The fourth annual "differently-abled" art exhibition features the works of artists who have experienced adversity and challenges, and have incorporated that into their artistic practice, inspiration and presentation," according to the JCHAC. The show focuses on different ways of seeing and experiencing the world reflected in art. "It is about sharing, awareness, artistic expression and courage," stated the JCHAC. "It is about art origination from inner spaces not experienced by most people and about the creativity that emerges from such spaces and experiences. "The reality of each life made visible is a powerful tool." An opening reception for the show will be held Sunday (Feb. 1) from 2-5 p.m. Art from the Heart continues at the 1086 Burnhamthorpe Rd.
