The Halton Multicultural Council (HMC) wants to give community members a glimpse of other traditions at its New Year's Around the World and Volunteer Appreciation event Thursday, Feb. 5. In what's becoming an annual gathering, the event will feature booths with items that represent a variety of countries, as well as snacks and sweets from those venues. At least 15 countries will be represented, including Canada, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, China, Japan, Brazil, Holland, Romania will be represented as well as traditions from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. "We started this because we wanted to introduce everyone to how other countries celebrate the New Year and to learn about other countries," said Shinobu Yajima, HMC Community Connections Group and seniors worker. "We also want to celebrate our volunteers for being involved with our activities and their commitment to us." The HMC is a community-based settlement agency that provides programs and services to immigrants and refugees. Staff and volunteers work to give individuals the opportunity to participate in their local community. About 150 volunteers assist clients, who are newcomers to Canada, through programs, such as a conversation circle, seniors and youth activities, office help, language aid and special events.
