L Sometimes relaxation must be thrust upon those who need it That's Life Andy Juniper Guest Contributor 9 | Thursday, January 29, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com ast Friday night, I got hit by a bus. Actually, I only felt like I'd been hit by a bus. Truth be told, I was run over by the stomach u that's making its annual rounds -- and the collision between me and that bug set me up for the most lazy, restful weekend I've had in a long time. It began on Friday morning. I awoke feeling weird. Given that weird tends to be my norm, I just got on with my day. Wrote all morning. Ran errands in the afternoon. Worked out at the gym, and then raced home to ready myself for a dinner out with friends. Ah, but by mid-cocktail, the savory smells in one of our favorite restaurants turned against me. It was then that I knew I was, in the words of Ed Grimley, "as doomed as doomed can be." Suf ce to say, I bailed before the appetizers arrived and returned home, acutely aware that I was in for one long, lousy night. Saturday found me on the couch, unable to move, what with the throbbing head, the still somersaulting stomach, and overall achy-breaky body. And on that couch I agonized over my inability to get anything done. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a complete Type A -- you know, one of those guys who can never relax, never allow himself time to decompress and just wile away a weekend in peaceful, pleasurable pursuits. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm a total Type A. The last time I put my feet up for a weekend, John Denver was atop the pop charts. I believe it was Bill Shakespeare who said: "Some people were born to relax, others achieve the ability to relax, and some have relaxation thrust upon them." I nally gave up the ght and let relaxation be thrust upon me. To that end, I popped Extra-Strength Tylenol, sipped assorted uids, and wrapped the headphones around my head, eager to dive into What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World, the new offering from The Decemberists. And the indie folk-rockers from Portland, Ore., who have been wowing me since releasing Picaresque in 2005, did not disappoint: `What A Terri c Album, What A Beautiful Album'. Mid-afternoon Saturday, still stapled to the sofa, my wife suggested a TV marathon. Some old stuff, some new stuff: Downton Abbey; The Good Wife; The Big C; and Veep. We watched `em all, episode after episode, tossing discs into the DVD player like so many logs on the re. Admittedly, I watched some episodes with my eyes open and some with my eyes closed. Regardless, what a glorious gorging on TV treats. Sunday found me feeling considerably better, but still in recovery mode. I ate a good breakfast. I took the dogs out for a leisurely walk in the woods. And then I returned to the couch, castigating myself for getting sick on the one weekend since last September that didn't have a full slate of televised football to keep me company. I brie y considered my to-do list, then shrugged and took a nice, long nap to cap off a lazy, restful couple days of being a sofa spud. All in all, it wasn't a bad weekend. Minus the whole getting hit by a bus part. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www.facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/thesportjesters.
