One evening while was en grossed in the problem of figur ing out what shot to play when we were three poian down play ing the eighth end and our oplt poncnts had managed to further harass my predicament by clut lcring up the house with four more potential counters friend of mine or he was up to this moment dashed across the scene tiings from three ice lancfs distant and said Say Ken There is one problem you didnt men tion in your book What strategy do you use when your ship has last rock every end and you have nt hit thcscoreboard in eight ends Fortunately he didnt wait for an answer because at that mo ment his skip could be heard bawling Sweep swecpf at the top of his lungs and my friend hustled back at the sound of these frantic bleatings to help Now that recall the inc Ident occurred during mild all evening earlyln Novem her The freezing plant was wheezing and gasping in dcspcrate effort to circulate the cold brine and pump suf ficient Jack Frost into the ice to keep it frozen and dry with trace of humidity in the air the ice that night pro vided major study for the alert skip and nauseating nightmare for any strategist whose mind hadn tendency to wander Onsuch occasions the ice event ually becomes very keen on the areas over which the rocks are continually being played Some times on the home end you will find yourself and opponents play ing continual succession of our turn shots and the path worn by the procession of rocks will make the parabolic ice trail over which the stones have been passing lightning fast so that you barely have to breathe on your draws and guards when delivering them Suddenly long guard forces you to play the othcr turn then comes the guess and bygolly What weight is needed to get rock into position when it must pass over ice that hasnt been used fonseveral ends good sklpu tries to engineer his opponents into that position but often It happens to him when he is least expecting it it happened to Walsh the skip of the 1956 Bri Champions from the Fort Rouge ClubWin nipcg in the playoff gameagainst All Phillips 0ntario rink at Moncton NB last March And as luck would have it it occurred on the thirteenth and when Bill was confronted with wellguarded Ontario stone just back of the fourfool ring when KEN WATSON he came to play his last rock it was tense situation and contained all the drama of one of Alfred Hitchcocks more pulsat ing yarns Walshs only recourse was wide bottom on unused ice How much heavier was this side ice than the keen surlt face on the centre of the sheet How much extra weight did he need How much ice should he take toi barely skim the guard and reach the opposing stone that stood between him and his second Canadian Curling Titie These were the questions that he must answer and In swer correctly After several minutes of consultation with Al Langiois his viceskip Bill called for the ice and took that long walk down to the back at the other end while the spectators in that jnmvpackcd stadium held their collective breaths The Manitoba skip knelt in the hack and carefully cleaned off the cup of the last stone of the 1956 Brier He knew he must not be light for even if he did kick out the Phillips rock and roll out himself there was still the fourteenthcnd Withhis mind made fup he let it go and 3500 pairs eyes fol lowed it every foot of the way until it cleared the guards struck the cheek of the Ontario stone to rnvoe it through the rings then rolled towards the back rings while the Ontario viceskip Hailed at it with his broom to sweep it out of the house Ironically enough the frosted unused ice that had been so formidable hazard to Bill Walsh in making his shot now smiletl benignly on him as its rough sur face gripped the cupof his stone for firm bite on the twelvefoot ring of such things are the fortunes of curling made NEXT ARTICLE IceMan ship continued BARRIECHURCH HOCKEY iOOP NOW HAS BANTAMAGE GROUP The Barrie Church HockeyAs sociatidn saw its Mariner Folding of the Simcoe Gunners intermediate hockey team after having plsyed only one game of the league schedule comes Is shock In hockey fandom in Star Wt it marks the fi season with in mcmory of the ey fan that Simcoe out either an intermediate or junior OHA team Simcoes membership in the OHA goes back at least to thetum of the century and dur ing that period of more than bit years the town hasalways been represented leither by an inter mediate or junior entry and some times both Simeon has always been regard ed as strong hockey town with homebrew players formiog the bulk of team personnel down through the years Consequent ly the collapse of this years team before the season had fairly gotten underway gives cause for searching examination of the reasons for this lamentable downfall it is only four seasons ago that hockey had reached its zenith in simcoe from the viewpoint of fan interest and enthusiasm for the Gunners when for the first time in history Simcoe team won the provincial intermediate championship it had required two or three seasons following completionof Simcoes new arti ticlal ice arena to build up team of championship calibre it must he confessed too that the importation of quite num ber of talented players was necessary to accomplish the pur pose The new arena was packed time after time by avid fans as Gunners strove for titular hon ors and finally accomplished their objective From that time onward gradual diminution of interest was apparent even though the following season Simcoe entered senior ranks and went to the OHA championship finals Some fans maintained that it was mistake to step up to the higher classification and their argu ment was validated the following season when the Gunners made poor showing and the crowds in Simcoe Arena dwindled Last season number of hock ey supporters made an effort to introduce junior hockey to Simcoc and although contend ing team was iced it was evi dent that locai fans were not in terested in sufficient numbers to justify continuation this year it became apparent toothatthe building of hurling rink in Simcoe took away the interest of substantial number of fans while the advent of television hockey games induced many fans to stay inthe warmth of their homes rather than spend few hours in an unheated arena ltisclear too that Simcoe hockey fans are not interested and longer in imported hockey play prs After the war and withthe coming of artificial ice arenas to many towns in the province keen competition for hockey players developed with large sums of money being paid for their services Those jdays are just about over and it is now clear that for Simcoe at least the one hope for future OHA hockey is thedeveiopment of local tal cut We are fortunate to have the Simcoe Minor Hockey As sociation working towards this end it may be another year or two before the present teenage players are ready to become the nucleus ofan intermediate 3tearn but they form the only assurance of restoration of intermediate hockey in Simcoe It seems strange anomaly that such good hockey towns as Sim coe and collingwood which only few years ago had the top in termediate teams in the province are now without intermediate hockey teamlast season and will have none thisyear Both wns have suffered from the inroa ofpro fessional hockey whose pro moters and scouts are grabbing up the pick of the young talent in every town in the province which make itLalmost impossible to run junior team without professional alliance Moreover these promising youngsters are removed from their own com munities for thebest years of their hockey lives and thus in termediate hockey suffers body blow in many town It is malady that canonly be cured when the socalled amateur hockey organization in Ontario decides to sever its insidious al liance with the professional hockey moguls who are interest ed in one thing onlyflMOblEY Collingwood had no sy no1 MacPHAlL Canadian Press staff Writer The
