thatvthe move was meeting with approval in nearby communities And little did local persons know that the cheéliest persons were those at Collingwood Mid land and Orillia collegiates Split Hurt when the doors to North Col of this great number of athletes only few played with the Flyers 195m mama 1956 my last season None of the lads have been guaranteed positions this year but its pretty safe bet that at least three of the lads will be around alter the final cut All defencemen Marv Rutledge Ed Westfall ahd Dale Rolfe show ed enough potential last hockey season to indicate that they could play good hockey in this league and help the club immensely Rutledgc and Westfall have three yearsnof Junior hockey eligi bility ahead of them Rolfe whos been up and down for two seasons has two years left Westiall and Rolfe were the most impressive of the three In the early stages of his first season here Kalle loomed as quite goalscor ing threat However he tailed off alter Christmas that first season and had to fight hard to win place with the club lastwinter The 195758 season was in direct contrast to the ZOOpounders first season Up to Christmas Rolfe forward then couldnt do much more than carry his stick After the holiday however coach Hap Emms gave the big fellow defence post and he came on like house fire Westfall started out strong last season and by the midway mark rated spot on the allstar squad His game tailed off immediately af terwards Rutledge never did see too much action but thekid showed he was game all the way He was hampered somewhat by an upset stomach early in the schedule but when he was on the ice always gave it every thing he had Not toomuch is krian about the new boys who conie from all parts of Ontario as well as Newfoundland Quebec and Nova Scotla At least three other lads who played on last yearsclub will be at training camp They are forward Danny Patrick defencerhan Wayne Haig and goaltender Norman Jacques All are in their last year of junior hockey Patrick by far the out standing ofthe trio could very well lead the club to where they intend to gmHowever its generally agreed that the Flyers could get some good material in return for Patrick Danny finished well up in the scoring last year and what club doesnt want thehservices of top scorer Halg was rookie last year and sat out thovstretcb part ofthe schedule with broken ankle Jacques split the gualtending job with Ross Brooks and in our eyes was the better of the two However both goalies suffercdrfrom lack of support and sometimes overwork gt The whole camp should prove interesting at least The Flyers have been kayocd in the first round of the playdowns the last two seasons This of course is far cry from what you folks and the club manage ment want of the boys Unless the club can show an early improvement of the 195753 its chances of struggling into the last playoff spot again are beatt winter St Catharines has nine holdoversl Guelpha last place finisher last ability comes to mind He was hustler and doggoned hard worker If these attributes can rub off even lightly on the prospective Flyers then the locals should turn out to be quite club After leading the Flyers for few seasons Meger jumped to the professional ranks with the Buf falo Bisons of the American Lea gue In his first season he won the rookie award as well as acclaim from everyonembo watched emscari1e in Jthe senior hop step and jump So the story goes Brian Wiles of Central made tremendous jump right over the pit then is back with one hand landing in the rectangular plot Wiles sup porters seemed to feel the dist ance should have been measured from where the lads feet landed especially since he had cleared the pit altogether Rather than win first place in this event Wiles had to settle for third Then in the seniormile relay Barris Central was disqualified for having pacer Two Tough Events This really miffed the Central gangas the lad who was sup posedly pacingAl Drury over the last few yards of the race did not even go to the school Before it was announced that the Central team was disqualified itcwas noted that the foursome had established new mark It would have remained so with or without the extra man in the race Immediately after his fine burst in the relay Drury had to dash to the vaultingenclosure where he was one of the finalists The lad knew he couldnt do much
