stands on the threshold of one of the most iiiipoitaiit pro duction seasons iii its history The year 1946 finds millions of people throughout the world in imminent peril of starvation It finds Great llritainalarmingly short of food supplies and the Britiin people tight ening their belts to an extent that was not required of them even dur ing the most desperate days of the war Under these circumstances it is only natural that the world should look to Canada and particularly to Ontario for relief frotn the conditions of famine with which so many So there is call to Ontario farin crs in this year of lSllti to again put forth their best efforts in the production of food This is not new farmers of Ontario call to lll Iliroughdut spondtid to the call for greater pro duetiun as their contribution to the national war effort How well they have done their part can be illus trated by reference to the pro dtiction of Ontario farms for the year 1945 That was it difficult year for the farmers The weather Conditionsnt crucial periods of the growing season were very unfavor able There were shortages of farm labor and farm machinery which imposed severe handicaps on the farm operator and long hours of labor on the farm fam ily In spite of these conditions Ontarios record of production was second to none in the Dominion and contributed to the United Na tions larder the food products most needed While the Western Pro vinces made their chief contribu tion in wheat and other cereal grains Ontarios diversified agri culture provided great variety of food products in urgent demand for export purposes and playeda great part in meeting the needs of the hungry millions of theold world The following figures of produc tion of specific products in the year 1945indicate in some degree the extent of Ontarios contribution in that direction Cattle570000 head Calves292000 head Hogs1900000 head Sheep and Lambs268000 head Poultry86948000 pounds TTON KENNEDY Concentrated and in export markets They must redouble their efforts to ini prove the quality of their products so that they will be at least equal to the best produced anywhere else in the world They must adopt every possible means of lowering their costs of production sothat they may be able to competewith countries on cost basis They must be prepared to cooper ate with each other in providing more efficient and
