Budget committee eyeing fare hikes for 2015 by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, January 22, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Town of Oakville is looking to increase rates and fees for some of its programs and services -- including a $5 hike to an adult Oakville Transit pass -- but it aims to freeze student transit rates. The Town's budget committee -- chaired for the seventh straight year by Ward 6 Councillor Tom Adams -- met Tuesday to discuss the proposed increases and hear from the public. On average, increases will range between two to three per cent -- which should raise an additional $1.1 million in revenue for 2015. The adult monthly Oakville Transit pass would increase from $105 to $110. General fees for items such as tree removal, park access permits, bleacher rentals and field lining are set to increase by five per cent. Ice rentals for 2015 will go up by approximately three per cent, while community room (including Town Hall rooms), gymnasium and some Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre room rentals will see increases of three Pharmasave Drugs, Metro, Listen Up Canada, Best Buy, M&M Meats, Pizza Hut, Lastman's Bad Boy, Rabba, Bulk Barn, Real Canadian Superstore, Oakville Library Magazine, No Frills, Lowes, Food Basics, Beddington's Bed & Bath, New You, Elite Gold Group, JYSK Bed & Bath, 2001 Audio Video, Home Hardware, Hudson's Bay Co., Leon's Furniture, Fortinos, Maritime Travel, Desjardins, Miller Direct, Shoppers Drug Mart, Lorna Vanderhaeghe Health, Rexall, Canadian Tire, Staples, Sears, Centennial Windows, Reliance, Future Shop, Danier Leather, Drug Trading, Brick Mattress, Home Depot, Sobeys, Freshco, Target, BMO, Tangerine inside today's Spotlight Health Beaver Trails Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 42 44 Arts Sports Classified 45 47 50 For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online at www.oakvillebeaver.com *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes to four per cent. Recreation programs, rentals, transit fares and parking, as well as development and planning permits, are funded with user fees and taxes. Ward 1 Regional and Town Councillor Sean O'Meara asked that the proposed four per cent hike to Oakville Harbour's mooring rates be changed to two per cent. The increase would bring in approximately $76,000 in additional revenue, while the lower increase would collect $38,000, said Nancy Sully, Oakville's deputy treasurer and director of financial planning. Despite support from Ward 2 Councillor Pam Damoff, the committee rejected O'Meara's request.
