GenNext connects with young adults continued from p.16 event after working with a UWO employee for a school project last semester. While she gets invited to many networking functions, this one stood out for her because "You get face time with executives and you get to ask them questions," she said. "A lot of time, you have to mingle on your own and it can be intimidating approaching those people. If you know you're going to have a sit-down with them to ask the questions you want, it's more appealing to come to an event like that. It's valuable for you," said Warr. Fellow corporate communications student Lindsay Whelan said the most beneficial part of the evening was listening to the different perspectives of each person. "One executive I spoke with was very planoriented. The next person I spoke with said, `I didn't have a plan and that's OK.' It was nice for me to hear that sometimes plans work and sometimes they don't. It really depends on you as an individual," said Whelan. "There is always something to learn and this was a great opportunity. Every individual that was here wanted to be and I found a lot of great value in each of those conversations." UWO CEO Brad Park, a participant on Tuesday, said the gathering went "incredibly well, especially for a first-time event." "You never know how it's going to play out, but this worked out exceptionally well. I talked to all of the executives, all of the attendees and the feedback has been 100 per cent positive. I couldn't have asked for anything more," said Park, noting the possibility of a second networking event next year. The function drew 30 executives and 60 students/young professionals, raising $4,000 for UWO's 2014 campaign, which has been "very positive," Park said. "These are the future leaders of our communities. Whatever we can do to help navigate them through the system or get them engaged back in the community and meeting with the corporate leaders is a benefit to everyone." UWO's 2014 campaign will end with a celebratory event announcing the total funds raised on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd. The event runs 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $40 each or $300 for a table of eight.
