Suspect | courtesy Halton Regional Police Volunteers sought to help track Trumpeter swans $20 is all it takes to start saving for a home addition. Oakville residents are being invited to help out with a Trumpeter Swan Survey Saturday, Jan. 31 as part of a global swan count conducted every five years. "Having many volunteers out around the province looking for Trumpeter swans and reporting on them will provide much new, invaluable information on swan abundance, geographic distributions and seasonal habitat use needed for conservation and management," said Bev Kingdon of the Trumpeter Swan Restoration Group (TSRG). Trumpeter swans were hunted out of existence in Ontario by the late 1800s. In the 1980s, the birds were reintroduced, in Ontario, by retired Ministry of Natural Resources biologist Harry Lumsden. The TSRG has been working with the Trumpeter swans since their reintroduction and is authorized by Environment Canada to band and tag the birds. "It's easy to participate," said Kingdon. "Trumpeter swans are very conspicuous and can be easily distinguished from the two other swan species found in Ontario, the Tundra swan and Mute swan, by their all-black beaks, legs and feet. "The equipment required is minimal and data are basic things that are easy to collect. Even not seeing any swans at a locale is important to record." For information on how to take part in the survey and to download data recording sheets, visit www. trumpeterswancoalition.com. Don't forget: The 2014 RSP deadline is Monday, March 2, 2015.
