Prepare to take the Dip Jan. 1 Canada's first and largest polar bear dip is celebrating its 30th year this Jan. 1, 2015. More than 700 people took the plunge in the chilly waters of Lake Ontario for last year's Courage Polar Bear Dip and with it being an anniversary year, organizers are expecting a record number of participants this New Year's Day. This year also marks the 20th year the fundraiser has partnered with World Vision Canada to raise money for clean water projects around the world. Last year's event raised more than $140,000 and more than $1.2-million has been raised for World Vision Canada since the partnership was created. "This is our family tradition. It kickstarts the New Year with fun and laughter, shivers and a little cold," said Todd Courage, who cofounded the event with his brother Trent. "Most of all, it leaves us with a warm feeling that we have had a positive influence in people's lives through World Vision. It's a great invigorating feeling," said Todd. Last year's dippers ranged in age from four to 76. Everyone is welcome. There will be live music and a costume contest to entertain both dippers and spectators. The day's activities begin at 12:30 p.m. in Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. The dip takes place at 2 p.m. Anyone wishing to take part can register online at www.polarbeardip.ca.
