finance at the council meeting Monday night The total expenditures of the town for 1949 will exceed half million dollars Mr Hart explained in referring to the state merit which covered the period to November 15 Included in the receipts for 1949 is an item of $3359031 tak en from the reserve account It was decided to use this money to help offset the deficit carried over from 1948 The property committee went over its budget by $557065 in mak ing the alterations to the tire hall and market building It was es timated this work would cost $5500 but it actually cost $1107065 Most other Toner had gone to bed for the night but they Were rousedby the fire alarm signal over the telephone line As soon as Miss Toner woke up she could see the flare from the garage next door She and her mother escaped fromthe house and some of the furniture was saved The fire apparently started in the garage of Jerome Shanahan It started about 11 oclock and was fanned by high wind The fire soon spread to the house of Mrs Toner who is sis ter of Mr Shanahan Although the substantial house was of brick the fire soon spread down through the roof to the iri terior The flare from the large garage and the house could be seen for 10 miles bucket brigade was organ ized to save some of the nearby The home of Peter Fallon Was also threatened This house Was occupied by Mr and MrsFallon their two small children and Miss Leone Kennedy sister of Mrs Fallon Water to fight the fire was ob tained from the home of Mrs Joe Loftus and other neighbors was believed that Adrian Graddoek was one of the
