many friends in Bar rle and especially to the business men with whom he was ill close contact as secretary manager of the Chamber of Commerce for two years to learn of the death of Major Lovell John Stiver OBE in Sunnybrook Mil itary Hospital Toronto Wednesday of last weekl Several times since he took his new pOSil tion at Port Arthur he had been back to Southern Ontario and always spenta day re newing acquaintance here He was in Toronto in June for the International Trade Fair and at that time he had not been feeling well but to his friends there was no indication as he radiated his genial personality as usual It was completely unexpected that few weeks later he would become critically ill and fall to recover Major Stiver had distinguished military career and had advanced to an important degree In the field of Chamber of Commerce work He went on active service at the out break of war and eventually became G802 at Camp Borden Headquarters in charge of training Following tour of service over seas in 1943 he was awarded the OBE He became secretarymanager of Barrie Chamber of Commerce at the end of the war He liked Barrie very much and it was with great regret that he left for Port Arthur but he could not turn down the great op portunity for advancement which came late in 1947 It was with equal regret that direct ors of the local Chamber accepted his re signation but all were glad of his opportun ity It was clear indication of his capabilw ities The late Major Stiver was one of the best irifle shots in Canada and several times re lpresented his country on the Bisley team in England He was possessed of fine baritone lvolce and his songs were delight to hear lHis friendly character was such that he made friends easily wherever he went It is with ya great sense of loss that we record for the citizens of Barrie their deep regrets at the Cuntimely lossof Major Jack Stiver andex tend sincere sympathy to his sorrowing par onts sisters and brothers THE COUNTY HEALTH UNIT The Town Council of Collingwood has re quested the Simcoe County Health Unit for breakdown of monthly costs as pertaining do the Town of Collingwood In reply Coll ilrigwood was advised that this could not be done owing to the Unit being short of per sonnel Collingwood in response said that lsueh figures should be available for every Vmunicipality in the County and passed are splution to this effect Doubtless there has been some criticism of this branch of County Council activity but this has seldom been backed with necessary figures and other details This however doesnot detractfrom the rasonableness of Collingwoods request for statement of what the operation of this Uriithas been casting the town nor is it an answer to the requestthat every municipality besimilarly treated While municipalities Yard entitled to ledge as to the means of preventing these diseases will be made available to the public There are some other communicable dis eases which will receive attention iii some parts of Canada at least Tetanus is one In some parts of Canada BCG is recognized as an effective means of preventing tubercu losis It is interesting to note that during inumber of years recently there has been no smallpox in the Dominion In 1948 there were 898 cases of diphtheria in Canada with 85 deaths and 7084 cases of whooping cough with 155 deaths The number of cases of whooping cough has fallen from 19082 in 1943 to 7084 in 1948 These diseases have diminished largely because of widespread use of preventives which are considered to be ef fective Last year there were almost as many deaths from whooping cough as from diph theria scarlet fever and poliomyelitis com billed While unfortunately poliomyelitis is not yet preventable disease diphtheria and whooping cough are preventable The ex penditure of time energy and money in see ing to it that preventable maladies are pre vented is more than justified It is hoped that parents throughout the Dominion will cooperate with the health authorities in see ing to it that their children are immunized PICK UP LOOSE OBJECTS The summertime is the season for circus es and using this idea the Industrial Accid ent Prevention Association in poster is sued recently use an illustration of seal balancing ball to drive home the fact that fall can be serious The bulletin stat es that seal can balance on aball But try it Youll probably fall to stressethe necessity of good housekeeping on the job and gives the practical advice Pick up loose objects fall can be serious lt AFTER SEVEN YEARS Safety Engineer who had been serving with the United States Army Engineer Corps tin Korea talking to friendT on hisretum to the States about the newest develop ments in accident prevention was told that there had been no new thinking and there were no new techniques of any consequence in thepast great many years and that the right kindof effort now as then got results while the wrong kind still did no good ltgt OPINIONS
