Would-be intruders a mystery for new residents by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 11 | Thursday, January 15, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Members of an Oakville family, who recently relocated here from Buenos Aires to live in a safer place, found themselves thwarting two potential late-night intruders at their Glen Abbey home. Luis Iratchet, his wife, and their two children, aged two and seven, were at home on Sunday Jan. 3, when they heard their front door rattle as someone attempted to gain entry. "When I went to the front door, a man was trying to open it... he was using his finger to try to open the door guard," Iratchet said. "I yelled at him `What are you doing? This is not your house,' and he said, `Oh, sorry, sorry someone invited me to the basement and they told me the door would be open'." The family had just moved from Argentina in late December 2014 and chose to live in Glen Abbey, in the vicinity of Pilgrims Way, because they understood it to be a safe community. "We're trying to make a new life here," Iratchet said. "Everybody said that Glen Abbey and Oakville is one of the safest places in Canada and a week or 10 days after we move, this happens." Iratchet and his wife found the situation quite "scary," but decided that despite it being suspicious maybe the unknown man did just have the wrong address. However, a few days later, on Jan. 6, the family was again spending a night at home when a car pulled up in front of their house around 10 p.m. and someone again tried to gain entry through the front door. "Someone tried to open the door, but it was closed and when I turned the lights on, he or she went to the car and left," Iratchet said. Halton police said they haven't received any recent information on home invasions in the Glen Abbey area, but said they encourage anyone with information to file a report. Iratchet said he's been told by police to get in contact with them if a similar situation happens again. In the meantime, the family has taken extra precautions by installing an additional door guard, installing more lights outside the house and changing the locks in the home.
