MARRIAGE LICENSES AUCTIONEERS Full Moon To-day Determines Date of Easter Sunday Full moon will occur at noon today, Thursday. This is the reason we have Easter Sunday to occur this year on April 17, for, according to the formula of determining that event, Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring after the spring equinox of March 21, when the sun crossed the equator coming up from the south to- the north, symbolizing the resurrection of the life from, the winter of death. The first full moon preceding this date occurred on March 16th. As the times from full moon to full moon again are shorter than the month, they seldom reoccur on the same day of the week or of the month throughout the year', and this causes Easter to shift to and fro when determined by the formula just described. The Hebrew offical custom, with imp slight variation, was to detpr-ine Easter by the time of the full oon in a sort of "mean time," which regarded the 14th day of the month as the time of full moon re-"lless of its precise phase or the parti.cular d:.y of the week. In the early Christian centuries these two positions furnished material for bit-controversy which was finally settled at the council of Nicaea in year 325, when it was decided that Easter shall always be celebrat-iri Sunday, the first day of the week, and it has remained so to the present time. Many advocate the convenience of having a fixed day of the month as well as a fixed day of the S. E. Clayton O. Dudley, Warkworth, and Gerald AVilce, Castleton, called on Dundonald friends Sunday after-Mr. Sam Poole, Castleton, spent a few days, last week with Mr. and Mrs. W. S. McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDonad. The W. A. cf Etlen Church will hold the April meeting at the home of the President, Mrs. Lewis Mutton, on Wednesday, April 20th. Mrs. J. J. Mutton has returned to her Dundonald home, after having spent the winter at the home of her sister, Mrs. E. H. Clarke, Aurora. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mutton, Mrs. Harry Mutton. : Mr. Rex Mutton and Betty were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Macklam, Brighton, on Sunday. Sunday School as usual in Eden Church next Sunday, but no other service as the Eden congregation . is invited to worship, with the Shilbh people in the morning at the usual hour. On April 8th, 1938, a fine baby boy arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norris Herley; another boy added to the long list born lately in this section of Cramahe. So many boys is said to be a sign of war. Mrs. Gordon Honey, President of Lakeview Women's Institute, invited a number of Dundonald women to attend a meeting of the soc.ety at her home on Thursday, when quilts were quited and afternoon tea was served. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Goodrich visited Mr. and Mrs. S. Goodrich, Castleton, on Sunday, and found Mr. Goodrich able to be around and also to take occasional drives and make short visits in adjacent neighbourhoods. The farmers in this locality are all at ease, held back by storms and cold weather from getting on the land, but they ar.e not idle and are pressed into service by the home-makers and home-keepers in the spring house-cleaning. But the beating of carpets and rugs and the hundred and one tasks they are called on to perform js evidently not congenial as their woe-begone looks testify. The Easter service held in Eden United Church last Sunday were in keeping with the joyous event which it celebrated. Eden United was prettily decorated, the choir gave special music, the Shiloh people turned out in full force, and with the Eden congregation reminded one of the good old days when all the foulks went to' Church. The Pastor beloved gave an inspiring sermon and all felt it was good to be there. A very entertaining evening was, given friends" from Dundomald and. surrounding communities when the.] Castleton Y.P.L. presented their play, "Correspondence Courtship," on Friday evening, April 8th, in Dundonald Hall. The play was brought to Dundonald under the auspices of that energetic young woman's Sunday School Class, the "Busy Pals," who later serve.d lunch to the talented players from Castleton. Mr. Kenneth Mutton acted as chairman, and a duet by Misses Mae and Doris Mut-tton and a short talk by Rev. Armstrong supplied the entertainment between acts. The weather was very unfavourable, yet the proceeds were $16.00. John J- Trottman John J. Trottman passed away after a painful illness at his home near Duridonald on Saturday. April 2nd, 1938. in the 57th year of his age. American by birth, he came to this place from Rochester, N.Y., about twenty years ago and later married Miss Opal Van Wicklin, who with seven children, three girls and four boys, survive him. One son died in infancy a few years ago. His funeral was largely attended; nearly every family in this ne'ghbourhood was represented; friends also from Osh-awa and Bl.oomfleld, Prince Edward, were present. The servf.ee was conducted by Rev. A. Armstrong, assisted by Rev. Hinton of Castleton. Mr. WT. W. Mutton sang "No night There." Among the floral tributes were two beautiful wreaths from his Dundonald friends. The bearers were all near neighbours. A very large number followed the mortal remains of their neighbour to his last resting place in Walker Cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to his sorrwing wife and family in their bereavement. The evening was spent with music, singing and other amusements. About eleven o'clock Mr. I. R. Goheen called the company to order and Mrs. Alex. Chatterson read the following address: Dear Mr. and Mrs. McDonald: We, your neighbours and friends, of this community have met here tonight to greet you, Mrs. McDonald, as a new friend, and to wish you both the best of health and happiness in the days to come. Most of us have known you, Harry, for many years and have always found you a good neighbour and a true friend. It is to Mrs. McDonald that we wish to offer the glad hand of welcome, and pray that she may be spared many years to grace the home to which she has come, so recently and over which she will preside. May both your lives flow together in an even course down the stream of life and be filled with true love, happiness and contentment, God's richest gift to man. We would ask you to accept these pieces of furniture, not for their intrinsic value, but as a loving memento of this happy occasion, always remembering that •through these gifts we pledge our life-long friendship to you both. Signed on behalf of the donors; Miss Clarey, Mr. nd Mrs. I. R Goheen, Mr. and Mrs. W. McOracken, Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Chatterson. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald replied in a few well-chosen words, thanking their friends and neighbours for their kindness. Several close neighbours gave short speeches, after which all joined in singing "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." R. P. Stillman A former resident of Seymour township, R. P.
