Both team s w ere unde feated in their two previous playoff gam es and in the preceding regular season in w hich O -T w ent 10-0 in the Volpe D ivision and Notre D am e 6-0 in the Richardson Division. In their only previous meeting, in tournam ent action, the team s split their tw o gam es. O akville Trafalgar is a (See 'Oakville Trafalgar' page 02) The Loyola Hawks couldn't have asked for more at M onday's senior boys Halton cham pi onship gam e against perennial contender G eorgetown Rebels. There they were, after two exciting, action packed, well played gam es, deadlocked at 1-1 with Georgetown -- G eorgetown barely scraping by 25-23 in the first set. the winning point on a ref's call, and Loyola rebounding for a little more decisive 25-20 win in the sec ond set. And this against a team that had beaten them two straight in both their regular season encounter and in a tournam ent showdown. The third set. however, was like a night mare. In fact, there are som e Loyola faithful that remain convinced it d id n 't happen, that the 15-3 third set loss was. in fact, a bad dream. It did share m any elem ents o f a bad dream, especially the aspect o f being unable to alter the course o f events that are speeding to a seem ingly inevitable conclusion, namely being buried by G eorgetown, no m atter what they tried. In this case, it w asn't Loyola self destructing at all. it was literally Georgetown snow balling dow n a mountain. "That last gam e was pretty heart breaking after putting in such an effort." agreed Mary Salvo who coaches the Hawk team along with Deb Woolvet. Like any nightm are, the best adv ice is probably to forget it as fast as possible, and that's ju st what Loyola was planning to do. "W e're going to have a real fun practice tomorrow (Tuesday)," said coach Salvo. "We need to forget this game. We need to move on and we need to concentrate on O FSA A which is a bigger picture for us." The bigger picture she was referring to is the fact that Loyola are still very much alive in the triple-A OFSAA qualifier playdowns. And they are slated to host cross-town rival Blakelock today (W ednesday), 3:30 p.m.. in the Halton triple-A OFSA A qualifier. Loyola already defeated Blakelock in the Halton playdowns to get to M onday's Halton Peter McCusker · Oakville Beaver Loyola defenders go up for the block in M onday's H alton final. Team list included in story. final. So the question on many people's mind, is why do they have to play them again. G ood question. It all has to do with the wacky playoff sys tem that is in response to O FSA A's recent move to inaugurate a quad-A level across the province. Suffice it to say here, however, that a par allel playoff system to the regular Halton cham pionship has been under way for schools eligible for triple-A OFSA A and that Blakelock and Loyola won their semifinal gam es against Nelson and Holy Trinity, respectively. But more on that at the end. First to cap off the Halton championship, which was a real gem for the first two sets. "That was am azing volleyball," agreed coach Salvo. The trick now, she agreed, might very well be getting them to forget the third game and to rem em ber the first tw o ... "The first two were their best shot," she said. " I'm really proud o f them. T hat's what we need to do against Blakelock." LOYOLA: Corey Asadoorian (#9), M ike Asadoorian (#4), Matt Badrov (#15), Peter Cunningham (#7), Jeff Dortmans (#1), Paul M cKinlay (#6), Cal M unro (#3). Arek Rzadkowski (#8), Alan Cunningham (#5). Coaches: Mary Salvo and Deb Woolvet. WACKY PLAYOFF SYSTEM The playoffs have been a bit wacky the last few years with the new quad-A level created by OFSAA. One thing to rem em ber is that teams have to declare their O FSA A level prior to the playoffs. One other thing to rem em ber is that sm all er schools can choose to play above their level. But bigger schools cannot play below their level. So in M onday's cham pionship game, G eorgetown had declared quad-A and Loyola had declared triple-A.
