However, most of that pressure was supplied by the opposing Notre Dame Fighting Irish, which used a relentless forecheck to blank the Eagles 7-0 in Wednesday's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (G-HAC) boys hockey championship game. "They forechecked us extremely well. We made a few more mistakes than what we (normally make) but that's the most pressure we've faced (all season)," said Q.E. Park coach Larry Rinaldo. The Eagles' loss in the G-HAC final came six days after they beat Notre Dame 4-3 to win the Halton champi onship. The Irish knocked off Hamilton's St. Jean de Brebeuf 6-1 Monday in the G-HAC Challenge to earn another shot at Q.E. Park with an OFSAA berth on the line. Asked if his team was ready for the re-match, Q.E. Park defenceman Chris Veitch quickly responded, "no. I think we were a little too cocky from the last game we played them. We didn't put the pucks on net, we weren't going to the net hard... we didn't do the simple things like we did the game before." The Irish built a 3-0 first-period lead by scoring three goals in a span of 1:43. Adam Taylor opened the scoring, chipping a pass from Pierre-Yves Renaud over Eagles goaltender Oliver Wren and under the crossbar, before Bryan Mason and Dan Hammond completed the Notre Dame outburst. After Mason scored again in the third period, putting the game out of reach, Q.E. Park players appeared more intent on physical retaliation than mounting any sort of comeback. Josh Shrum and Bryan Carey were both tossed from the game and the Eagles played much of the final frame shorthanded, allowing the Irish to score three more times. "Our coaches warned us once they got down they would try to egg us into (fights)," said Hammond. "They said to do whatever (we had) to do to defend (ourselves) but don't get in a fight." Under Halton league rules, a fight results in a three-game suspension. Notre Dame defenceman Andrew Slomka missed the G-HAC final after fighting a Brebeuf player in the Irish's previous game. Notre Dame also played the G-HAC championship without two of their top scorers, Nick Leonard and Adam Bouchard, who are currently nursing injuries. "We tried to get lines together we thought would compete well Together," Irish coach Carl Van Landschoot said. "(Our players said they weren't) rely ing on any one individual at this point now... and that certainly showed on the ice. It was very much a team effort." The OFSAA boys hockey tourna ment will be held March 24-27 in London. Oakville defeated Monsignor Doyle 2-0 (25-16, 25-20) and Carleton Place (25-17, 25-20). Oakville lost to Dryden 2-0 (30-28, 25-22) and Widdifield 2-0 (25-18,25-14).
