At the Planning and Development meeting Tuesday night, planning direc tor Peter Cheatley, shocked many of his audience with information that Oakville may have to grow by another 40,000 people south of Dundas Street in addi tion to the 55,000 people slated for north of Dundas Street. And, Councillors were told, popula tion reductions in the north would prob ably be made up in the south. "I think I'm involved in a numbers game," said Ward 1 Councillor Mike Lansdown. "In short, you're right," said Cheatley, who told councillors firm numbers should be known May 10 fol lowing meetings with Halton Region. Cheatley was at the planning meeting asking councillors to receive the draft North Oakville Secondary Plan, along with draft plans for the north Oakville Sub-Watershed Management Strategy and the draft North Oakville Natural Heritage/Open Space System Plan. The plans have a March 31 deadline for public comment. Council is seeking public input before a second draft is pre sented in May, after which more public input will steer a final draft to Council for approval in June. Overshadowing Monday's debate was news about Oakville's population forecasts -- what they are and where they come from -- neither of which any one can say for sure. Ward 6 Councillor Tom Adams asked (See `Town' page 10) It's official -- Ann Mulvale is Oakville's mayor.
