"This is a spectacular day for Halton H ealthcare and the residents o f O akville, Milton and Clarkson," said Oliver. "We are now able to pro vide our patients and the res idents o f our com m unities with access to this sophisti cated diagnostic equipm ent as close to home as possi ble." Up and running since May, T he Sam uel MRI Centre - named in memory o f the late Ernie Samuel - is located adjacent to the exist ing Diagnostic Imaging area. E lizabeth Sam uel, his w idow , said the clin ic's opening was a "particularly happy m om ent" for her fam ily. " It is a wonderful and exciting moment for all o f us today," she said. T he technology involves the integration o f a m agnetic field, radio frequency w aves and a sophisticated com puter in frastru ctu re to produce detailed im ages w hich pro vide inform ation that cannot be obtained using other vari eties o f im aging. P reviously. H alton had only one M RI. located at B u rlin g to n 's Joseph Brant Hospital, w here it has served patients since 1997. The MRI at OTM H will help alleviate long waiting lists and will provide the hospital w ith the capacity to provide on-site MRI scans for traum a, em ergency and in-patients. Speaking as a radiologist, laughed Knapp, he said he c o u ld n 't think o f a better gift. The OTM H MRI serves an av erag e o f 15 to 19 p atien ts in a shift and. according to Sam uel, a sec ond shift will soon be added. H er hope, she explained, is to have the unit working 24 hours a day. HHS C h air Shavak M adon said the C e n tre's opening brings HHS "closer to fulfilling its mission o f seeking in novations to im prove our ability to deliv er care and services and be leaders in w orking tow ards a healthier com m unity." M adon then tu rn ed to Sam uel and said he hoped her generosity will be an inspiration to other potential donors. "Your gift o f com passion will resonate through our co m m u n ities touching the lives o f thousands o f people today, to m o rro w an d for many years to com e." M ayor Ann M ulvale agreed, saying that this " pow erful g ift" sets the benchm ark for others to fol low.
