Liam wants to grow up to be a firefighter, OPFFA helps by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, December 11, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Four-year-old Liam Cuttle dreams of being a firefighter and Oakville's firefighters want to help make sure he gets his chance. This past summer, Liam was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system that affects infants and young children. The disease can develop anywhere in the body, but most often occurs in the adrenal gland, and it is the third-most common type of pediatric cancer. Children with high-risk neuroblastoma, like Liam, face a 50 per cent survival rate. The Oakville Professional Firefighters' Association (OPFFA) recently announced it will be donating the portion of funds dedicated to the OPFFA Sponsorship Fund -- gathered from its 2015 charity calendar sales -- to the James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research. The donation, which will also include a portion of the OPFFA calendar's clothing sales, will be made in Liam's name (Fighting for Liam's Brigade). Liam's Brigade has a goal of raising $50,000 towards a research project at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), which aims to help children like Liam in their battles against neuroblastoma. Oakville firefighters, from left to right, John Vuckovic, Mark Tyler, Kurtis Mantell, and Alvin Jones were featured in the 2014 charity calendars with support from future dog guide puppies, from left to right, Mugs, Fantom, Mercer, and Baffin. | Oakville Beaver file photo Liam Cuttle The Oakville Firefighters' 2015 charity calendar is an annual fundraising initiative and each page features a local firefighter see Community on p.9 The Drug Discovery Project at SickKids works towards finding experimental treatments. Liam recently completed his fifth round of chemotherapy and is responding well. After six rounds, he will have surgery to remove his tumour, followed by a stem cell transplant, radiation and immunotherapy. INJURED? I Can Help!
