www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 11, 2014 | 8 Sheridan remembers 14 women slain in Montreal Massacre by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff Sheridan College students and staff gathered in solidarity Friday to call for an end to violence against women as Canada prepared to mark the 25th anniversary of the murder of 14 women at Montreal's École Polytechnique. On Saturday (Dec. 6), the country recognized the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women as it reflects the date (Dec. 6, 1989) when 14 women at the University of Montreal engineering school were killed in what's become known as the Montreal Massacre. Sheridan's President and CEO Dr. Jeff Zabudsky led Friday morning's ceremony at the Trafalgar Road campus, which was attended by approximately 50 people. Sheridan College commemorated the 25th anniversary of the murder of 14 women at L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal Friday, one day in advance of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. White roses were placed beside the photos of the 14 slain women after each of their names was read aloud. A peace garden in front of the Sheridan building is a lasting memorial to the slain women. A similar garden also exists at the college's Davis campus in Brampton. As part of the ceremony, Kelly Martins and Ron Gonzales from the Performing Arts Preparation program read poetry in support of ending violence against women. "Despite our best intentions, violent acts still do occur," Zabudsky said as he discussed steps the college had taken to foster a climate of respect and inclusiveness. Annual lockdown drills, the Safe Walk program and the installation of security cameras as well as lighting on the wooded trails near the campus are all measures the college has taken to reduce risk. Zabudsky said the Student Code of Conduct is being re-drafted to explicitly include sexual assault as an offence that will be reprimanded in the wake of a string of see Speaking on p.22 R0012976206 Celebrate the Holiday Season With Us!
