The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e sd a y D e c e m b e r 3, 2003 - B5 Salvation Army Food Drive falls short of expectations By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Despite having more volunteers than it could use, Saturday's Century 21/Salvation Army Food Drive ended as a major disappointment, say organizers. According to sales rep Mary Kay McCoy, this year's effort netted only a third of 2002's full tractor-trailer load of donations. "This was the worst one I 've ever done," said McCoy, who has co-ordinated the drive since 1989. " We had the most volunteers ever, even with the cold and I had to tum some away. The sup port from the volunteers was there. The support for food was not as good as in the past." Last year's drive netted a staggering 95 per cent of what the Salvation Army foodbank collects all year. This year's results were so bad, said Salvation Army spokesperson Wendy Perkins, a second drive may have to be organized for the spring. " The food we have w ill run out by the end of February," she said. More than 1,000 families stood to benefit from the drive. Original Art hrii/ntinas^ pottery ? Helping Vincent is his mother Joanne Taylor and his stuffed hen. A ll is not lost, however. Donations will still be accepted and can be dropped off at the Salvation Army Lighthouse Shelter, 170 Country Squire Lane, and the Salvation Army Community Church, 1225 Rebecca St. (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and the Toy Depot at Hopedale Shopping Centre. Protein foods are especially needed. The Salvation Army is also looking to collect $18,000 to cover the cost of the Christmas voucher program. This initiative, which replaces the traditional Christmas hampers, offers fami lies the chance to sit down to a real holiday dinner by providing chits worth $25 per adult and $15 per child. Saturday's volunteers ranged from the sales and office staff at Century 21 Miller, the staff and families at the Salvation Army, church groups, high schools stu dents, families and groups of friends to single individuals who spared some time to help. Some high school students, disappointed at not finding bags outside homes, changed strate gies and knocked on doors to ask for donations. " They came back with smiles on their faces," said McCoy. " They felt like they accom plished something." Another volunteer had her car rear-ended before she started her collection route. Instead of giv ing up, she reported the accident to police then finished her rounds. The contest challenges students to write a short story as a way to communicate with their peers about the risks that can be asso ciated with teen gambling. Numerous researchers around the world have found that the prevalence of problem gambling among youth is two to three times that of the general adult population. "We're looking for messages created by youth for youth," says Laurie Bell, Director of Prevention Programs for the Responsible Gambling Council. " Youth gambling is an issue that warrants our attention and we need to develop messages that entertain as well as inform to engage this age group." Scholarship prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 will be awarded to the three students with the respective first, second and thirdplace entries. Winning stories may also be published and/or converted into a future stage production that will target high school audiences. Tht? Short Story Contest is open to Ontario students in grades 9 through 12. All entries must be received on or before Monday, January 19, 2004. A selection committee will review all eligible submis sions and the winners will be announced in May 2004. The short story mast be a mini mum of 1.000 words and no more than 2,000 words. For more information and contest details, visit the Responsible Gambling Web site at: www.responsiblegambling.org Previous contests held by the Responsible Gambling Council have resulted in the production of highly suc cessful stage productions that have toured high school gymnasiums and auditoriums across the province, reaching over 65,000 young people. Three-of-Kind is just wrap ping up its second tour asking students to consider what can happen if gambling becomes more than a game. The Responsible Gambling Council is a not-for-profit organization that helps indi viduals and communities address gambling in a healthy and responsible way, with a strong emphasis on preventing gamblingrelated problems.
