S E F U M U E K 2<>. 2(K)4 · I )1 SPORTS Hockey junkie finds Blades a good fix T he Toronto M aple Leafs were sup posed to play their first pre-season game on Friday. O f course, that game wasn't played, and instead the griping about a winter without hockey continued, with fans becoming increas ingly frantic as October 15, the scheduled first regular season Leafs game, approaches. What are fans to do? A picture of millions of mourning Canadians sitting in front o f blank television screens comes to mind. But it doesn't have to be that way. Just because the Leafs aren't playing doesn't mean that there is- no hockey, and after spending Friday night in the bleachers watching the Oakville Blades slaugh ter the Buffalo Lightning. I'm not sure the NHL was any more fun to watch than our own OHA Junior 'A' team anyway. Consider, for example, that one of the most com plained about aspects of the NHL in the past few years has been the boring, defen sive play and the low scor ing that results from it. Then think about Friday's game in Oakville. The Blades won 13-0. That's not a typo. It really was 13-0. In fact, in the first five (See 'Blades' page D3) The O akville Blades had plenty o f good chances in their 13-0 win over Buffalo on Friday, like this one by #11 M att Beca. Peter McCusker · O a kville B ea ver Things are about to get a lot tougher for the 5-0 Oakville Blades By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPO RTS EDITOR The Oakville Blades show every sign of con tinuing where they left off from last year in provincial junior A hockey action. In a memorable season, the Blades won their first ever western conference championship and gave a scare to the eventual national champion Aurora Tigers, winning the first two games of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League semi final before bowing out in six games. This season, the Blades have not skipped a beat in compiling a 5-0 record, including Saturday's 93 win over host Mississauga Chargers and Friday night's 13-0 win over the Buffalo Lightning. As it turns out. the teams they have beat are all languishing at the bottom of the standings. In fact none of the teams they have beaten so far this sea son are even in the top six of their respective divi sions. But that's not exactly the Blades fault. They didn't make up the schedule. This weekend, however, they should get a stiff test as the schedule lakes them from the current bottom feeders to the top of the pack, visiting the 6-2 Milton IceHawks Friday night and the 6-0 Georgetown Raiders on Saturday night. Both are perennial powerhouses and traditional rivals of the Oakville Blades. Georgetown, in particular, will be looking to avenge their upset loss to the Blades in five games in last season's western conference championship. Georgetown was ranked second in the country at the time. The following weekend (Oct. 8/9) is their big weekend as they help to officially open their new home at Oakville Twin Rinks on Friday, Oct. 8 in a rematch against Georgetown.
