The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 29, 2004 - B3 Backwoods Bike Tour on Sunday Get your bikes in gear for the Backwoods Bike Tour and Barbecue on Sunday. Oct. 3 organized by GreenTrans and sponsored by The Oakville Beaver. The event is being held to promote alter native transportation options such as pedestrian, bicycle and public transit. A fund guided bicycle ride along the scenic trails o f north Oakville will be followed by a free afternoon barbecue. This event includes three Ride choic es for cyclists o f every ability and a trail walk, basic bike tune-ups provided by Cyclepath, watering stations provided by LifeSource Water Systems, rest areas with first a id water, help and informa tion, an outdoor barbecue at Cyclepath, and a raffle for prizes. The rest stations are at St. Ignatius o f Loyola School Upper Middle Road and Nottinghill Gate and Lions Valley Park - Dundas (Hwy 5) and Neyagawa Boulevard. The event starts and finishes at Cyclepath, 507 Speers Rd., between Dorval and Fourth Line. Participants must be registered to participate. Registration takes place at Cyclepath from 10 a.m. onward. People can also register at one o f the two the rest stops. There is the choice o f a 24-kilometre and 12-kilometre ride, plus a 6-kilome tre ride/trail walk. The 24-kilometre ride starts at 10:30 a.m. and heads west on Speers Road to Fourth Line and north over the QEW and into the Glen Abbey Trail system at Fourth Line and North Service Road. This leisure ride meanders along wind ing paths alongside creeks and mead ows. Ride for approximately 6K to the First rest station at St. Ignatius o f Loyola School. Riders will have about Five min utes to stop and get some water, infor mation, mechanical assistance and First aid, then continues along the trails to Lions Valley Park for light refreshments before returning through Glen Abbey Trails to Cyclepath for the 1 p.m. bar becue. The 12-kilometre ride starts at II a.m., at Cyclepath and also heads west on Speers Road to Fourth Line and north over the QEW and into the Glen Abbey Trail system at Fourth Line and North Service Road. This leisure ride also meanders along winding paths alongside creeks and meadows. Ride for approximately 6K to St. Ignatius o f Loyola School. Riders will have about 10 minutes to stop and get some water, information, mechanical assistance and first aid if needed before continuing along the trails and returning to Cyclepath Instructions for he 6K Ride/Trail Walk, starting and finishing at St. Ignatius o f Loyola Secondary School, will be available upon registration. This community event is open to people o f all ages and abilities, residents and non-residents o f Oakville. Children under 14 must be accompa nied by an adult. Helmets must be worn by cyclists 16 and under and are recom mended for all participants. All participants will be given a badge upon registration. This badge must be worn to be eligible for the free tune-up, on-trail assistance. First aid, refresh ments, barbecue and raffle. This is not a race. Ride safely, obey the rules o f the road and be courteous to pedestrians and fellow cyclists. Anyone riding or behaving in a dangerous fash ion will have their privileges revoked. Abbey Oaks barbecue, dog show A barbecue and dog con tests will be held on Saturday. Oct. 2 at the Abbey Oaks Off Leash Dog Park to raise funds for the Oakville Humane Society. The park is located on the west side o f Neyagawa Boulevard just north of Dundas Street. The event, presented by the Abbey Oaks Off Leash M anagement Committee, will be held from 11 a.m. 2.p.m. Gourmet hot dogs and pop will be served. The dog contests staged by the Oakville Humane Society will have prizes and ribbons for all first, second and third place winning dogs. The categories are: dog that looks most like their owners, silliest dog trick, dog with the best wag and wiggle, dog that gives the most kisses in 15 seconds, the biggest dog. the smallest dog and dog with the best costume. The entry fee is $2 with all proceeds going to the humane society. There will be a raffle draw for a doggie gift basket, three certificates for a full dog groom, dog bed, $60 gift cer tificate for dog food. $100 gift certificate from TRUE Spa, $40 gift certificate from Saltcreek House, figurines, plus many more prizes. O akville's newest off leash park is a spacious, fully fenced area with amply park ing and a pergola for shade. The barbecue and dog contests held last May raised $1,500.
