Thursday, May 4, 1961 NIPIGON NOTES NORSHORE SENTINEL BAKER RINK CHAMPIONS OF NIPIGON CORLING CLUB by Lila McOuat Friday evening saw an excellent crowd out to enjoy the good fellowship of the Curling Club Annual Spring Dance. Presiding over the presentation of trophies was president Bill Me Kinley assisted by Don Cochrane. The Crown Life pin presentation to the Bill Baker rink for their ‘eight ender’ scored over the Earle Young rink was made by Roy McKee of Port Arthur. It was one of ten such presentations made by the company to rinks all over the dominion. Attending the dance were Ron and Wilma Swail of Port Arthur who spent the weekend visiting with Willie and Lillian Silta. Karl Auer, our local photographer and fellow worker on the Sentinel staff, will leave this weekend for a weeks vacation. Karl will be attending the annual Photographic Fair held in Toronto. He will also be visiting with his brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Bert Auer. We’re sure Karl will come home with some dandy photographs taken at the fairâ€"they even supply live models! Attending the Dorion Jamboree Saturday evening were five members of the Nipigon Square Dance club who reported an excellent evening of entertainment was planned for the many guests. Ann and Bert Donaldson, â- Helen and Gerry Rhodes and Natalka Onyshkewych thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It takes the outlying points to give a Jamboree that ‘folksy’ flavor. The hall was decorated in the western theme with wagon wheels and right down to the ‘home cookin’ in a ‘Cakewalk’ number and the draw, a live hen in a huge box, (really there was a dressed chicken as the prize) the evening was a huge success. Congratulations to the organizers of the event! A presentation was made to the Byron Roberts for their untiring efforts. Here’s hoping more of our Nipigon people will take up square dancing in the fall so that such an event may be part of Nipigon’s spring fun too next year. Walter Modin and Mary Jane Zamic were business visitors to Nipigon recently and will be returning later in May. Thank goodness for ‘bookkeepers’ is all I can say. Among the list of people vacationing over the weekend will be Don and Mary Jo Cochrane Carden and Susan Wells, Guy and Betty Rushton and Bruce and Margaret Ward. The four couples are planning a ‘Shan-grila’ weekend at Ludsen, Minnesota. Wish you were there? So do we. Visiting with Rene and Jean Aubut over the weekend was George Legere of Little Long Rapids, Canon C.F. Large of North Bay spent two days visiting with Allan and Viola Assad en route to the Lakehead. Many former patients of Dr. Cooper will be pleased to know he is here once more while Dr. Jeffrey is away on vacation. This is the season for fixing up. We understand Buzz Taisey spent a week of his vacation painting the inside of his home. Bet it looks great! Mrs. L. Braslin will hostess the regular meeting of St. Mary’s W.A., May 11. Thursday, May 11 will be a big night for many scouts and cubs of this area when the Father and Son Banquet will be held in the Legion Hall. Plans were made for the event at a meeting held April 27. Attending the meeting were Anne Me Cullough, Sylvia Andrechuk, Mike Ochitwa, Vye Johnson, Dale Andrechuk and Jim McCullough. This banquet is planned to help the scouts and also as a fund-raising effort. It is to be hoped the fathers will support the boys on this night. GEORGE C. From narrow string straps two criss-cross, wide bands drape around the bodice to tie again in a string tie belt centre front. The skirt is slim and straight. One of the new, short, flared coats would set off the slim lines of this dress smartly. INITIATE MEMBERS The regular meeting of the O.O.R.P. Lodge, Nipigon, was held in the Elk’s hall, Tuesday, April 25. Honored Royal Lady Sara Kivisto presided. Final plans for the catering for the Hydro Banquet to be held Saturday were made. A donation was made to the Cancer Society. During the evening two new members were initiated, Mrs. L. Braslin and Mrs. J. Sharpe. Fourteen ladies from the Lodge made a trip to Geraldton May 2 to present the travelling gavel and log. Yolks which have been hard-cooked can be put through a sieve and sprinkled on soups, salads or creamed dishes. CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY CANVASS RAISES s222 SCHREIBER CLUB REPORTS The Schreiber Children's Aid Committee met Monday in the Town Hall with Mrs. C. Graham presiding. The meeting was opened with prayers led by Rev. R. Crook. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. N. McGuire. A report on the recent canvass was given with a total of $222.00.being realized. Miss Muriel Atcheson gave monthly report stating she had made four adoption placements in this area during April. She is now making preparations to attend Treaty Day at the different Indian reservations. Mr. L. McCall spoke briefly expressing the appreciation of the Board of the C.A.S. for the time and effort spent by this committee in assuring the success of the Children’s Aid Society work in the district. Mr. J. Herbert Dawson, local director of the C.A.S., Port Arthur was introduced by Mrs. C. Graham. Mr. Dawson gave a very interesting talk on the Children’s Aid Society as a whole, mentioning the size of the district which presents many problems of transportation. There is always a great need for social workers in such a large area. Mr. Dawson then spoke on Public Relations, stating that the public seems to think the C.A.S. is just ready to ‘grab kids’ while their main effort is to build and maintain family life. To better public relations Mr. Dawson has spoken at home and school association meetings to municipal councils, written articles for newspapers and spoken on radio. The fourth problem of the C.A.S. is finances with the biggest expenses being hospitalization and clothing. Mr. Dawson spoke also of the need for homes for Indian children and older children who are hard to place. A social evening followed.
