6 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday 16, 1961 Dorion - Hurkett Happenings By Anna Laiocque Ten members of the Stirling Lyons Womens Institute answered roll call at the monthly meeting Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Mary Boyko. Mrs. Loretta Dupuis, president was in the chair and called the meeting to order by the singing of the institute ode. Mrs. Ann Larocque acted as secretary in the absence of Mrs. Jean Fawcett. The minutes and financial report were approved as read. A report was given by Mrs. Loretta Dupuis that $28.65 was collected for the March of Dimes. Under discussion was the rental of the hall to Teen Town. The members decided to rent the hall to the Dorion-Hurkett club for $8.00 providing they do the cleaning after each dance. A report was, also given by Mrs. Boyko, leader of the 4-H club on her work. She reported that she has five girls in her club and work has started on their new project. The members also decided to purchase new stove pipes for the hall stove. A door prize donated by Miss Flossie Hodgkinson was won by Mrs. Ann Larocque. The’ next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. T. Keating on April 5. Lunch was served by the hostess assisted by Mesdames Theresa Holtzman and Helen Symankiewz. The Dorion Home and School held their monthly meeting in the school Monday evening March 6. Guest speaker for the evening was Cpl. Ted Broughton of the OPPs of Nipigon. Also giving a speech during the evening were the three top speakers of the Public Speaking Contest which was held Wednesday in Dorion. Mr. Henry Brown, principal, gave a talk on how the report cards are marked. A social hour was held following the meeting with lunch being served by the ladies. Mrs. Mae Coulombe has returned home from Nipigon Memorial hospital. Mr. and Mrs. A. Nuttall are proud parents of a baby boy bom Saturday, March 4. The Dorion Do-Sa-Do's will hold a general meeting following their lessons on March 10. All members are urged to attend. Lloyd Haugen spent a day with the Brian Broughton’s en-route to his home in Alberta.. Mr. Haugen has just returned from a trip to Norway. ELECT E.C. EVERETT E.C. Everett was elected president of the Nipigon-Red Rock-Cameron Falls Liberal Association Sunday. Ike Mutch was elected vice-president and Mrs. M.S. Me Cullough secretary-treasurer. The next meeting will be held April 9 at the Normandie Hotel. Everyone is invited to attend. Rangers Puck Champions Meet Rangers, winner of the Leitch Athletic Trophy in the Beardmore Bantam League. The Beardmore Hockey season ended with the Leitch Athletic Trophy going to the Rangers, coached by Alvin Davidson. An extra game had to be played against the Red Wings, coached by Sandy Kuzik, when the fifth game of the playoffs was still tied at the end of the regular overtime period. The Rangers won the decision with a final score of 2 to 1. In the season play, Rangers won five games, the Red Wings four. The two teams tied three games. Top scorers for the season in the Bantam League were F. Richards, of the Red Wings with 16 points; C. Kozak of the Rangers, 15 points; E. Czerwinski of the Rangers, 14 points; J. Elliot of the Red Wings with 11 points. Top penalty-getters were G. Wladyko, Rangers with 18 rain. C. Kozak, 14 min., E. Czerwinski, 12 min. Top team in the Pee Wee League to win the Canadian Legion Trophy was the Bruins who defeated Canadians in the playoff. In the regular season games, the Bruins won six games, tied two and had no losses. The Canadians won three, tied two and lost three. The Leafs were the hard luck team with one win and seven losses. Top scorers in the Ree Wee League were J. Lewendow-ski with 11 points, E. Richards with eight, B. Campbell with six and W. Franz with five. F. Silvaggio drew the most in penalties, six minutes. C. Franz, league chairman organized the seasons hockey with the able assistance of coaches, S. Kuzik, N. Kozak, F. Motyl for Red Wings; J. Campbell, Y. Poirier, A. Davidson for Rangers; F. Richard, D. Gordon, c. Turcotte for Canadians; A. Dampier, J. Kenna, R. No let for Bruins and R. Clerihew, J. O’Brien, P. Lavoie for the Leafs. Equipment Managers were B. Reiners, H. Schnurbusch, N. Campbell, J. Goodman. Referees were J. Ahl, J. Banman, Father Harris, D. Gordon Jr., D. Lake, F. Richard, F. Motyl, J. Campbell, A. Dampier, J. O’Brien. CAMERON FALLS CALLING Cameron Falls junior and senior boys hockey teams met their counterparts of Red Rock, Saturday at Red Rock. Our senior Rangers apparently left their winning streak behind and came out on the bottom, 4-0 despite a hard-fought game. The junior Rangers, who all season seemed to have just gone along for the ride scoring-wise, turned but to be The Cameron Falls banner-wavers this week. They didn’t win - but they did tie the game 4-4 - a vast improvement, over their previous showings.’ Roddy Renaud and Jim Zeigler' had two goals each for the locals. Sandy Keown left Saturday for. Toronto where he will undergo further examination and treatment. Here’s the weekly resume of the bowling scores. Bea Keown is still holder of the high single and triple in the women’s division although her score is good enough to beat all the men too. She had a 380 single and 825 triple.
