Thursday 16, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL 3 DISTRICT SQUARE DANCERS ENJOY RED ROCK JAMBOREE Red Rock Belles and Beaus were hosts for close to 250 square dancers from the Lake-head to Beardmore to Schreiber Saturday night in a happy evening of square dancing and fun at the annual Jamboree. Above the dancers are shown whirling to the music and voice of the caller, George Ellerd, president of the Lakehead and District Square Dancing Association and Bryon Robert, left, instructor for the club. It was one of the most successful jamborees ever with callers from each of the representative clubs taking their turns at the mike. The dancers were welcomed by Roy Evans, on behalf of St. Lawrence Corp. BEARDMORE’S WINTER CARNIVAL ENJOYED BY YOUNG AND OLD Here are the winners of the costume prizes at the Beardmore carnival, from left to right: front row, Gail Campbell, Mark Schell, Ronnie Campbell; back row: Theresa Paubert, Tracy Enders, Susan Sainsbury; third row, (centre) Kim Schell. Beardmore’s annual winter carnival came off in glorious style over the weekend with residents enjoying two days of good weather and good fun. The schedule of events went from costume judging to broom-ball to snowshoe racing to hockey to log sawing and whatever else you’d like to mention! Costume judges Wilma Cox, Barbara Matte and Freda Stoughton were faced with the problem of choosing the winners among dozens of clever and colorful costumes worn by the children on Saturday Evening. First prize for fancy dress went to Theresa Faubert, as an old fashioned lady, first prize for comic went to Susan Sainsbury as Humpty-Dumpty and first original to little Gail Campbell as a leopard.. First prize for the boys fancy was awarded to Kim Schell in his Indian costume, while Clown Ronnie Campbell won the comic class and Tracy Enders as a ring master won first in fancy dress, and little Mark Schell as the smallest entry and the tinest version of a Mousketeer. Officials of the carnival were Blake Gillis, Jules Banman, Clarence Franz. A Pee Wee Hockey game started the Carnival Saturday afternoon with a game between the Red Rock and Beardmore teams, Red Rock winning 2-0. Referee Alvin Davidson was assisted by linesmen J. O'Brien and time keeper Clarence Granz. In the broomball game the Legion defeated the Moose 3-1. Some fancy goal tending and foot work by Legion goal tender Popeye Richard added excitement to the game. Sunday afternoon the buck sawing contests wound up the 2 day affair. First in the men’s event was Peter Gladu (10 second) second Nate McGuire (10.4) third Roy Schell (11.2 seconds). Time keeper for buck sawing contest was Ben Reiners. In the ladies buck sawing, first Bernice Enders, second Elizabeth Gladu in 14 seconds with her hand in a cast, third Marianne Wahl in 14.1 seconds. Snowshoe races, first Barney Morriseau, 10 minutes over the /one mile course, second Tom McCready 11 minutes, third Frank Morriseau 11.3 minutes. The results of the skating races held on Saturday afternoon were: BOYS 6 and under: Roddy Faubert first, Willie Morriseau, Kim Schell. BOYS 7 and 8: Tracy Enders first, Pat O'Brien, Charlie Tur-cotte. BOYS 9 and 10: Robert Bois, Carl Turcotte, Wayne Banman. BOYS 11 and 12: Frank silvago first, John O’Brien, Brian Campbell. BOYS 13 - 15: Calvin Kozak first, Fred Richard, Wayne Franz. BOYS 16 - over: David Gordon first, Calvin Kozak,- Pat Faubert. GIRLS 6 and under: Marlene Buta. GIRLS 7-8 years: Betty Ann Compeau, Jackie Silvago, Janice Richard. GIRLS 9 - 10: jMarie Grover, Brenda Findley, Barbara Timmerman. GIRLS 11 - 12: Sheila Val-kainen, Lorraine Banman, Rose Marie Richard. GIRLS 13 - 15: Simone Poulin first, Nancy Trottier, Carolyn O’Brien.
