And for the second straight game, the Canadian national women's soccer team featured two Oakville soccer stars in their line-up. Kara Lang, in her second full year with the national senior learn despite being only 16 years old. pulled Canada even at 1 1 at the 41 st minute when her strong right-foot shot beat the Brazilian goalie to the near post. Randee Hermus scored the winner for Canada in the 56th minute. Also suiting up for Canada was Diana Matheson, 18, who was called up to the national team for the first time earlier this year and is making the most of her opportunity (see photo, page D3). Canada also won the opening game 2-1 on Thursday night in Montreal (as recounted in Saturday's edition). Another area resident. Melanie Booth. 19. of Burlington, played most of Thursday's game but did not suit up Sunday. Matheson, last year, helped the Oakville Storm women's team to the Ontario Cup and national club championships. Lang wore two hats, helping Canada's U-19 team to a sil ver medal in the U-19 world championship and helping Canada's national team to a crucial silver medal at the Gold Cup in the U.S., which secured them a berth into this year's world championship in the U.S. this September. A ll three players are hoping to be named to Canada's World Cup team. Lang is now suiting up for the Vancouver Whitecaps of the United Soccer League's W-League and has tentative plans to return to St. Thomas Aquinas this fall. Matheson and Booth are slated to head to Princeton and the University of Florida, respectively. "These games are great preparation for us," said Canadian head coach Even Pellerud. "It is great to see us come from behind in both games and shows how strong we are. It was another great crowd and great atmosphere and we can't wait to play in Edmonton and Vancouver." He was referring to Canada's next exhibition tune-up series against Mexico in late August and early September. On Thursday in Montreal. Kara Lang had a foot in Canada's victory over Brazil. The Oakville native set up the first Canadian goal in the team's 2-1 win. blasting a shot that was stopped by the Brazilian keeper before teammate Rhian Wilkinson knocked the rebound into an open net. Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver Kara Lang tiad lots of reason to celchrate in Canada's two-game exhibition series with Brazil. In Montreal on Thursday night, where this photo was taken, she nabbed a key assist to put Canada on the board. In Ottawa, on Sunday night, she scored the opening goal. OH JOY! `Horns are one game away from a perfect season but first place will still come down to final week The Oakville Longhorns were miser ly on defence again, notching their sixth shutout in seven games in Northern Football Conference (N FC) action last Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field in Oakville. The 'Horns shut out the Mississauga Wolverines 32-0. The 'Horns improved to 7-0 while the Wolverines fell to a still respectable 5-2. Despite the Longhorns' perfect record, the battle for first place will come down to the final weekend. That's because the Sault Ste. Marie Storm also have an identical 7-0 record. And the `Horns actually have the tougher battle, taking on the host 3-4 the Oakville Longhorns' Rick Andrade (#25) has to carry more than just the football in Northern Football Conference action against Mississauga Wolverines Saturday night. Harrison Smith · Oakville Beaver OFF MY BACK! Tri-City Outlaws while the Sault hosts the 1-6 Sudbury Spartans who nabbed their only win this past weekend against the winless Belleville Panthers. The 'Horns and Sault have obviously not faced each other this year with the NFC having expanded to 1 1 teams and only an eight game schedule. And first place does matter in that it brings with it a quarterfinal bye. The quarterfinal schedule over the August Civic Holiday weekend has three quarterfinal games -- 2/7, 3/6 and 4/5. If both first-place teams can win this weekend (or, actually, if both should lose), the 'Horns would easily win the tiebreaker. That's because it's rather unique in that it just counts points against, with the points-for column completely out of the equation. The `Horns have only 21 points against (while having scored 307) while the Sault has 80 against (while having scored 192).
