Positive move for Isaia As proud Canadians we have just celebrated Canada's birth day. Rich in ethnic diversity and respect for cultural differences, Isaia and his family epitomize the very concept of what it is to be Canadian. For many ethnic groups, an intellectually disabled son or daughter becomes a family responsibility to be shouldered by that immediate and extended family. For some cultures, the disabled individual is hidden away from the rest o f society but supported and loved within their own family. Isaia is an example of one such individual. For 37 years. Isaia has been a proud and sheltered member of a strong Italian family. He is loved, adored, included and embraced by immediate and extended family members. His family believes it is the duty of the family to care for his needs. But sometimes things change. Extended family are busy with their children and careers and Isaia's father and mother are aging and in ill health. With great reluctance, they sought assistance from Community Living Oakville (CLO) to help care for Isaia. Moving into a group home with four other men of diverse ethnicity has been a cultural shock for Isaia. Missing his mother's home-made pasta and succulent sauce. Isaia has to eat the food that reflects the ethnic are frequently left for the group to enjoy. The family is aston ished at how independent their son is becoming. They are also astonished at how' visible indi viduals with an intellectual handicap are within our commu nity. Agencies like CLO are proud that they make a difference in bringing independence and inclusion to those with a handi cap. It is not that Canada has more challenged indiv iduals but rather they are not hidden away and are encouraged to partici pate to their highest capabilities within our social community. It also comforting to know that agencies like CLO will care for their son while honouring the primary relationship with their family. Isaia's family does not feel like they have given their son's care away but rather that they are now part of a communi ty team with everyone working together to support Isaia. The transition for Isaia and his family has been an enlight ened experience. Family and agency support working hand in hand to offer life experiences and social contacts. Isaia's fam ily is learning that we can all work together, and CLO is learn ing important features from a strong, involved ethnic family. O f course we all want the recipes for that fantastic pasta sauce. Isaia says he now has two fami lies. one at home and one at "his' home. Moving into the group home and becoming pan of the day program at Community Living has not changed the family's love for Isaia. They visit the workshop and his home on an almost daily basis.
