C8 - The Oakville Beaver, Tuesday D e c e m b e r 30, 2003 Author offers two-pound bucket solution for stress relief By Craig MacBride OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Coot-Time author Steve Prentice With a new year comes new stresses, often self-imposed, and with resolutions to make and to keep, life can become hectic. There is a solution to the problem, though, said Steve Prentice, Oakville resident and author of Cool-Time and the Two-Pound Bucket: The Best Time o f Your Life. The solution is planning, preparation, communication and review. It doesn't sound like much, but his book does get more specific than that, about 270 pages more specific. And it's not something that can be done quickly, Prentice said; his method is not an overnight fix. In fact, though you will see results in the first week of his pro gram if followed correctly, your life will Year-end continue Brand Names · Designer Dress & Casual ...and more! not be entirely stress-free for four to six months. As well as penning this book, Prentice is also a consultant, doing in-house pri vate coaching, as well as public sessions, spreading his message of a stress-free life. It was while working in offices, observing how people are working, and how they fit their lives around their schedules, that he decided to write CoolTtme. Seeing workers staying at the office until 9 p.m., skipping lunch, not spending time with their family and always wrestling with more work than they had the time to complete. Prentice decided to turn his seminars into a book. "It was seeing people sacrificing their lives. I have problems with that. Life is too short," Prentice said. "Getting home on time shouldn't be a privilege, it should be part of your work." One of the easiest ways to do this is to consider the two-pound bucket, which symbolizes a 24-hour day. Prentice teaches that this bucket should only ever be 75 percent full, including things like sleeping and commuting. Then, if something happens that will destroy your well-planned schedule. there is some room in your day to deal with it. As simple as that seems, work loads often depend on the will of one's boss, instead of on oneself. That's where the communication comes in. It is impor tant to express to the people you work with, as well as your bosses, what you expect of yourself. The communication aspect of Prentice's formula is part of the imple mentation process, which is what, he said, separates his book from the others. Cod-Time describes "how to plan it, how to communicate it. You can't work in a vacuum." said Prentice. "My book is mainly different because it shows how to implement the program into your life and the lives of others." Along with the book, you get a rela tionship with Prentice, too. As he does with all the people who buy his book, he helps people with questions, and he helps review their plans, which is one of the most important parts of the program. Without review, he said, you cannot know how you're doing, and how your life management can be improved.
