Defending champion McMaster led much of the contest and carried a 19-9 advantage into the fourth quarter, but Montreal took the lead with a touchdown and field goal in the final frame. The Marauders had a chance to go ahead again in the last minute, but their 31-yard field-goal attempt was blocked. McMaster second-year receiver Declan Cross, a Holy Trinity grad, made two catches for 12 yards. Cross contributed 12 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown during the regular season, and added 63 rushing yards, 81 receiving yards and a TD in two Ontario University Athletics playoff games. Teammate Cole Munden, a third-year linebacker, recorded two solo tackles in the Vanier Cup. The Abbey Park alumnus had 10 tackles in eight games this year. Oakville running back Stephen Kofi-Akuffo (Loyola), offensive lineman Liam Oudman-Debek (St. Thomas Aquinas) and defensive lineman Andrew Ziebart (Iroquois Ridge) were also on the Marauders this season. Kofi-Akuffo scored a touchdown and ran for 81 yards in a 66-0 win over Waterloo Sept. 6, his first appearance in four years with the team. Madison Field scored twice as the Hornets topped one of the PWHL's perennial powers, the Toronto Aeros, 3-1 to improve to 22-0-2 on the year. "I think everyone in the league is waiting for us to lose, and no one thinks we can (keep this up)," said Field, the league's leading scorer with 17 goals and 21 assists in 21 games. "Going into that game was a chance to prove to everyone that we've had competition. We were all jacked up for that game." Field scored the only goal of the opening period and tallied again three minutes into the second to stake Oakville to a 2-0 lead over the Aeros, who came into the game with just two losses in 17 games. Toronto cut the lead in half late in the second period but Hornets goaltender Nikki Cece stopped the other 19 shots she faced to record the win. Amy Curlew added an insurance marker with 5:21 remaining in the third to seal the victory for Oakville. Cassidy MacPherson had two assists for the Hornets. Oakville will not play a league game again until Dec. 13, when it hosts the PWHL's second-place team and defending league champion, the Whitby Wolves.
