www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 4, 2014 | 10 Oakville District Labour Council honours activists by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff Canada's collective production capacity is at an all-time high and the notion that the country is going through a period of economic austerity is a "myth," says Unifor economist Jim Stanford. "There are millions of Canadians who don't have a job, or who have a job that doesn't use their skills and energy to their capacity," he said. "We are collectively capable of producing more than we ever have before. All we have to do is have the chance to work and produce." The vice-president of the Canadian Centre for Policy alternatives was the keynote speaker at the recent Oakville District Labour Council (ODLC) 14th annual Activists Awards Banquet. "It's not just the number of jobs in the economy that matters, it's the number of jobs relative to the number of people," Stanford said. As a left-leaning economist, the media commentator, and author, admits the fed- eral Conservative government doesn't always share his views. Stanford told the crowd Canada's workingage population has grown by roughly two million people since 2008, while the number of available jobs has lagged behind. "In the labour market, it still feels like a recession out there," he said. "You wouldn't know that we've had a so-called economic recovery for over five years and that's because, according to the employment rate, we are still in a recession." In addition to his address, several awards were bestowed, including the inaugural ODLC Lifetime Achievement Award that went to George Hicks -- officially renamed in Hicks' honour. Until recently, Hicks had served as the ODLC treasurer for more than 50 years. This special recognition award is not annual, and will only be presented to those embodying the qualities of dedicated, long-term service. Other award recipients included, Nancy Parkhill, a retired member of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Halton, who received the Political Activist Award. Parkhill is the recording secretary for the ODLC and sits on several boards, including the United Way of Oakville (UWO) and Retired Teachers of Ontario. Laurie West of the Worker's Health & Safety Centre, and CUPE Local 343, was awarded the Linda Jones Women's Activist Award; The ODRT/OFL Disability Response Team Award went to Amy Korzack, president of the see Job on p.13 Corrections: A story in the Thursday, Nov. 27 edition of the Oakville Beaver, Kids 4 Kids dishes out antibullying smarts, incorrectly described one of the anti-bullying strategies taught. Scott Graham teaches children if they are walking home and are confronted by a bully and in danger of being assaulted, they should yell the word fire to attract adult assistance. If facing a similar situation at school, youths are encouraged to walk toward a safe zone and approach a teacher or other authority. · · · A photo in the Friday, Nov. 28 edition of the Oakville Beaver of an injured deer that wandered into a Yarmouth Crescent resident's backyard incorrectly identified the creek in the area.
