"She (Yousafzai) stood up for the rights of children and girls in receiving an education. That particularly motivated me because Julia and I focus heavily on education. We see the value in education and we met people who did the same thing," said Emma. "I got to meet a ton of other motivated kids around the world who... all come from different backgrounds, different stories, but we all advocate for the rights of the child in our own way." Meeting her fellow jurors and ambassadors from other countries was inspiring because "they're all motivated to do the same thing as me," Emma said. "Some of the child jury members had very, very touching stories. The best part was we got to interact as children first, that way it was more motivating when we heard exactly where they came from." As emcee, she showed video clips and spoke about past laureates, honourary members and the history of the WCP program. "It was an honour to be able to emcee that ceremony because it was a very big deal. I had the opportunity to speak on behalf of the jury and all these youths who are just as passionate about the rights of the child as I am," said Emma. The White Oaks Secondary School student also gave the welcoming speech at the awards dinner, discussing her experiences and the impact the World's Children's Prize had on her while in Sweden. Upon returning home, Emma said she was motivated more than ever. "Before, I had only read about such things, but when you meet the children, the faces behind those whose rights are denied, it made me come to grips with how real this all was and how unjust this is," she said. While both Mogus sisters are World's Children's Prize ambassadors, only Emma went to Sweden. Julia stayed home to accept the 2014 Jack McGinnis Environmental Spirit Award on behalf of Books With No Bounds at the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) gala in Toronto. "I was absolutely honoured to be able to go and receive it, but it was sad not to have Emma walk up on stage with me. I was glad I could receive it on behalf of Emma, myself and Books With No Bounds," said Julia. With the environmental accolade to its credit, Books With No Bounds has the recognition of being a grassroots recycling and waste-reduction group, Julia said, noting it has diverted 20,000 pounds of used books from landfill sites. "We're not just addressing social issues, we're also addressing environmental issues, " she said. The Oakville siblings recently launched their new ecoliteracy program in Fort Severn and Deer Lake. It involves the distribution of environmental-related books to children. Julia noted Fort Severn was the "starting point" for ecoliteracy and the sisters plan to expand it quickly. The Mogus sisters founded Books With No Bounds in 2011 and have since shipped 66,000 books, 20,000 crafts and school supplies, 25 computer tablets, a MacBook laptop and thousands of clothing, shoes, toys and e-readers to First Nation communities and other municipalities in Canada and abroad.
