Dance Sm artly was recently selected for induction into the National Musuem of Racing's H all of Fam e in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Dancing Smartly into U.S racing hall of fame She was 'g irl power' personified, a remarkable Canadian who recently added another hall o f fame induction to her name. But to anyone associated with thoroughbred horse rac ing. Dance Sm artly was much more than just a champion. Already a member o f the Canadian Horse Racing H all of Fame (1995). Dance Sm artly, owned by powerhouse SamSon Farm, was selected for induction in the National Museum of Racing's H all o f Fame, located in Saratoga Springs. New York in early May. For O akville's Tammy Sam uel-Balaz. who heads SamSon Farm on behalf of her fam ily, any opportunity to speak of the only filly to sweep Canada's Triple Crown (Queen's Plate. Prince o f W ales and Breeders Stakes) is most w el come. " She truly epitomizes what our breeding program is all about." said Baiaz. of Dance Sm artly, bred in Canada by her father, the late Ernie Sam uel. " I wish Dad was here to see this. H e'd be very proud." Unbeaten as a three-year-old. Dance Sm artly, a grand daughter of famed Canadian champion Northern Dancer, earned Sovereign Awards (honouring the nation's top per formers in thoroughbred racing) in the three-year-old filly and Horse of the Year categories in 1991. She also won an Eclipse Award, the U.S. equivalent of a Sovereign, the same year. Despite her impressive racing resume. Balaz is equally complimentary of the daughter o f Danzig's winning person ality. "W e have noticed that her foals share what we call the `Dance Sm artly attitude.'" raved Balaz. " She has a special look in her eye and seems to hold court when you see her. She knows she's that she's special and w e're okay with that. She's earned it." Dance Sm artly is currently 15 years old and splitting her time between Halton and Kentucky. O f all Dance Sm artly's successes, too numerous to list. Balaz points to the 1991 Breeders' Cup D istaff at Churchill Downs in Kentucky as one of the proudest moments. " It was a thrill to see people waving Canadian flags in the stands and to know that she had become Canada's filly." said Balaz. of the thrilling victory over the top-ranked Queena. " It was an honour to share her with the country. Dad was always a proud Canadian, so it meant a lot to him and our fam ily." W h ile Dance Sm artly's induction into the National Museum o f Racing's H all of Fame is a major accomplish ment in itself, the enormity of the honour isn't lost on any one associated with Sam-Son Farm. " W e as Canadians, know how com petitive our racehors es are. but hopefully this w ill help others to step up and take notice, too." said Balaz. " It is something we are extremely proud of.""D ance Sm artly won 12 races in 17 career starts over three years, w ith lifetim e earnings of S3.263.836. She was the first broodmare to foal back-to-back Queen's Plate winners (Scatter The Gold. 2000; Dancethruthedawn. 2001). The induction ceremony w ill take place in August.
