Sheridan grad up for Premier's Award Long-time athletic therapist Marcia Franklin has been nominated by Sheridan College for a 2014 Premier's Award in the Health Sciences category. The Oakville resident, who graduated from Sheridan's athletic training and management program in 1985, owned and operated one of the first independent athletic therapy clinics in Canada for 22 years in Oakville. Currently, Franklin is a consultant at her former practice, now named Quality Care Sports Injury and Marcia Franklin Rehab, and at the York University Sport Concussion Centre. Franklin has treated thousands of patients over the course of her career. She has also been on the Canadian Core Medical Team at three Olympic games, and has served terms as president of the Ontario and Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. She was inducted into the Canadian Athletic Therapy Hall of Fame in 2013. "We are proud to recognize the contributions made by graduates like Marcia in raising awareness of the benefits of athletic therapy and providing leadership and support to other students who have followed in her path," said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, Sheridan's president and CEO. The Premier's Awards are conferred annually to recognize the outstanding social, cultural and economic contributions of college graduates. Winners will be announced Monday at a gala event in Toronto. Equestrian rider is Royal reserve champion Oakville 11-year-old Rylee Poole-Kohli (pictured, right) was reserve champion in the Small Pony Hunter Division at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair's equestrian competition earlier this month in Toronto. The Unbreakable Bold and Cold 5K will take place Sunday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. The race, which will start at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School (2420 Sixth Line, Oakville) is hosted by CameronHelps, a local charity that supports physical health for mental health and aims to prevent teen suicide through awareness, reducing stigma and wellness. Minor atoms win atom hockey tourney Lucas Di Risio recorded the shutout, Maanav Parikh notched a hat trick and the Oakville minor atom red Storm won the atom championship at the recent Bradford Blue and Gold Classic hockey tournament with a 5-0 victory over the Petrolia Oilers. Braeden Mazzon added two goals in the title game for the Storm, which had tied Petrolia 2-2 earlier in the tournament. Oakville won its three other games by a combined score of 18-4. Atom Hornets claim gold in double OT Anthea Al-Soufi's goal during four-onfour overtime won the Kitchener Oktoberfest girls' hockey tournament title for the Oakville atom BB Hornets recently. Al-Soufi's marker completed Oakville's rally from a 2-0 deficit in the final to the Stratford Aces. Katelyn Aldrige scored Oakville's first goal of the game in the third period, and Carley Clugston forced overtime with the equalizer late in regulation. Clugston also scored in Oakville's 1-0 win over Woolwich in the semifinals.
