She used to live in both cities before moving to Oakville last year. However, it appears the youthful grandmother she has an eight-month-old grand daughter - need ed a reason to walk the 180-kilometre distance, and Jamie Smith · Oakville Beaver Lee Scott of Walk on Water, a personal train er, took Connie Taylor under her wing and trained her for her 180-kilometre walk. has found it through her work at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. On contract as a consultant with the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation, Taylor will walk to raise money for paediatric research at the hospital. She's calling it Connie's Walk for Sick Kids. "This hospital is Canada's largest paediatric research institute and works in conjunction with other children's hospitals across Canada," wrote Taylor in a letter to family and friends asking for pledges. "It truly is a wonderful institution." To date, her pledges total about $2,000. Taylor will begin her walk at Ste-Anne-deBellevue on Montreal Island on Sept. 1, and finish five days later at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. She plans to cover 35 - 40 kilometres per day. Her daughter Alanna Church will accompany her on the first two days of her trek that will take them through lie Perrot, Hudson, to Oka by ferry across the mouth of the Ottawa River, and through St. Placide to Grenville on the north side of the river. Alanna has been accepted into medical school at Queen's University. Taylor is looking for somebody to hopefully accompany her from Grenville through Montebello to Masson on the third and fourth days of her walk. "It will be the only two days I'll be on my own. I'll be carrying my cell phone." Sheila King, a friend from Ottawa, will accom pany her on the last day from Masson to Hull and across the Alexandria Bridge into Ottawa and to the Parliament Buildings. She'll be staying with friends in Montreal during the first three days of her walk, and in Ottawa dur ing the last two. To prepare for this trek, Taylor has purchased two identical pairs of walking shoes, joined a power walking group and is currently being coached by a personal trainer. "I found out about the power walking group through the Oakville Newcomers Club and joined in the spring. We meet once a week, and I walk a few times a week with others and on my own." This power-walking group is run by Lee Scott, a personal trainer.
