The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 8, 2004 - D3 Bruins finally lose The Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team split g B H M two games on the road last week in Central League play. The Bruins beat George Brown 81-71 but, in a battle for first place, they were hammered 87-55 by their long-time rival Humber Hawks. Humber is seeded second in national rankings. The Bruins were sloppy in their win over the Huskies. They had 12 turnovers in the first half but managed to lead the game 37-29 at the break. Sheridan came out on fire in the second half with a 21-4 run to cruise home for the win. Maurice Smith led the way with 15 points and four assists. Duane Mark scored 12 points and Andrew Foster added 10. Both players were strong inside with nine rebounds each. The win set up Saturday's match with arch-rival Humber in a battle of unbeatens. The game was anything but close as the Hawks put the game away early. Sheridan shot a miserable 18 per cent from the field in the first half and struggled at both ends of the court. Humber dominated play and led it 4317 at the half and Sheridan was too far behind to respond. "We shot 18 per cent in the first half. We didn't do anything right. Oakville currently stands in 10th place in the 16-team junior Provincial Women's Hockey League with a record of 4-6-5. Both of the above mentioned opponents remain slightly ahead of Oakville in the standings, London at 6-4-4 and Biuewater at 7-5-2. B A I Atom AAA Rangers rally for foodbank The Oakville Rangers atom AAA rep hockey team is collecting food this Christmas for donation to the Oakville FareShare Foodbank. Players will be collecting food up until Sunday, December 19 and will be delivering it to the FoodBank prior to Christmas. The new Oakville T\vin Rinks is providing the team with space to set up a col lection bin. Visitors to the rink are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items to support this very worthwhile cause. But then again hardly anyone else has this past season in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). On the other hand, for the first time in five meetings between the two arch rivals, Oakville didn't lose, eking out a 1 -1 tie on a goal by the Ice's U.S. national team member Kimberley Insalaco in the last minute of regulation time. The two teams failed to resolve the deadlock in overtime. Tania Pinelli was awesome in net, stopping 41 of 42 shots including nine in overtime. The Ice fired back 24 shots, just two in overtime. Replying for the Thunder was Vicky Sunohara, a member of Canada's 2002 gold medal winning women's hockey team, assisted by Coley Dosser and Liz Macri. Nabbing an assist on Insalaco's goal was Kim McCullough. SUNDAY GAME For the Ice, it was like going from the fire to the frying pan as they had to take on the perennial powerful Toronto Aeros on Sunday. They could not get anything by Sami Jo Small, another 2002 Olympic gold medal veteran for Canada, in a 4-0 loss. The contest was played in Goderich. Oakville was outshot 41-31 in that game. Instead the 2006 Bell Canadian Open is set to return to the Hamilton Golf & Country Club for 2006, pending a vote by the membership, which was sched uled to take place yesterday (Tuesday). It was originally intended for Terrebonne, Quebec, but the course, currently under construction, is not expected to be ready. Instead, the CCQ course has been penciled in for 2008. Next year's 2005 Bell Canadian Open has long since been awarded to the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver B.C., marking the prestigious Open's first trip out west in almost 40 years. The 2007 Canadian Open has previ ously been awarded to Angus Glen in Markham. This past year's Open at Glen Abbey may have been the best ever with Vijay Singh beating Canadian hopeful Mike Weir in a playoff. Singh completed a career year in which he won the money, scoring and player of the year titles. The previous Open at Glen Abbey was also among the best ever with Tiger Woods stealing the show to nail the rare Triple Crown (British, U.S. and Canadian Opens). It looks like it will be at least a half decade before it will return, however.
