The lead negotiator for the Halton District School Board (HDSB) doesn't like the public way that she says the head of the region's elementary teachers' union has been conducting now stalled contract talks. Dawn Beckett-Morton, the board's executive director of human resources, believes the action may be tainting the future relationship of the two sides. "I'm concerned the ETFO (Elem entary Teachers Federation of Ontario) wants to negotiate in the press because we have to consider the long term." Beckett-Morton said it's mainly the tone o f the "accusa tions against the board" that worries her. Late last week ETFO Halton chapter president Maureen Weinberger stated that stepped up sanctions against the board will be considered if the union doesn't get a new contract out of the next mediation session, scheduled for Aug. 25. C8 o v e r d r iv e r Freak accident Jails Hamilton man A 47-year old Hamilton man died Monday morning after he was struck by a forklift while working on a north Oakville construction site. According to Halton Regional Police, the fatal accident occurred around 8:20 a.m. when Marian Janik was operating a forklift at a residential construction project near West Oak Trails Boulevard and Bronte Road. Investigators say Janik apparently dismounted the forklift and left the machine running. While he was working in front o f the machine, the forklift rolled forward and seriously injured him. Although Janik was working alone at the time, a worker at a nearby house saw the accident and came to his aid. Janik was rushed to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital but later succumbed to severe head injuries. At press time a joint investigation was underway by the Coroner's Office, Ministry of Labour and Halton Regional Police. The forklift was seized for examination. A coroner's inquest is mandatory in Ontario for all con struction or mining workplace deaths.
