Swimmers, basketball and volleyball players headed south to NCAA After training in Oakville together for the past decade, five Oakville Aquatic Club swimmers will be going separate ways south of the border next fall. Hannah Burgess, Abbey Saunders, Emily Ramier, Annika Grewal and Lauren Lalumiere all signed NCAA letters of intent Wednesday and will swim for five different Division 1 schools in the 2014-15 season. Burgess will join Oakland (Michigan), Saunders committed to Rutgers, Ramier will compete for Tulane, Grewal is headed to Connecticut and Lalumiere will swim for Minnesota. Burgess and Ramier currently attend high school at T.A. Blakelock, Grewal and Lalumiere go to Iroquois Ridge, and Saunders is a student at Oakville Trafalgar. Venom products to Big Ten, ACC Oakville Venom teammates Jaelyne Kirkpatrick and Julia Chandler will play women's basketball next season in two of the NCAA's power conferences. Kirkpatrick officially committed last week to the Big Ten's Illinois Fighting Illini, and Chandler signed on with the Atlantic Coast Conference's Syracuse Orange. Both players are current members of the Canadian cadette women's national team. Kirkpatrick, a 5-foot-5 guard, has helped the Loyola Hawks qualify for their first Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls' AAAA tournament, which began today in Guelph. She received interest from nearly 100 Division 1 schools, according to her father, Scott. The six-foot-two Chandler is a Toronto native who has commuted to Oakville the past four years to play forward for the Venom. Penn State dream comes true Last week, Tori Gorrell officially confirmed what she had known for six years -- she was going to play NCAA volleyball for Penn State. The Abbey Park High School Grade 12 student signed her letter of intent Thursday to join the Nittany Lions, a program she vowed to Complainant happy to see league make change at system level continued from p.51 where if we tell them to change their name or change it for them.'" According to Jones, the team whose name prompted the complaint features several high-level female players. According to the complainant, even though some people may be comfortable with the team names, that doesn't mean others don't find it offensive. "The women on that team have a right to feel the way they feel about it. No one should tell them to feel repressed or emancipated by it," said the complainant, who first saw the team name while she was at Canlan Ice Sports accompanied by a teenaged girl. She spoke to the Beaver on the condition of anonymity. "Some people's reactions will be there are girls on that team wearing that jersey, and they think it's funny. I still don't think that makes it funny." The woman also took issue with the fact it took her complaint to bring about a change in policy. "I just feel we can do better and I feel institutions can do better. I feel the ASHL did do better, and they will do even better with a policy change, something embedded and entrenched in their rules," she said. "Rick (Jones) will be gone one day, and then it might be someone else. And what if their line is different than Rick's line? There's no consistency. It shouldn't be grey. It should be embedded in their policies. That, to me, was the real win, making a change at a system level." Jones agrees. "There really wasn't a policy that you couldn't have any lewd names. Many of these names have been here long before I got here," he said. "No one's ever stood up and said we had to make changes, because we never had complaints. But we're in a new era. Things have changed over the last four, five, six, seven years. "We have to get back to the basics, like Chargers or Bruins, rather than these ridiculous names that demean some part of our population." 53 | Thursday, November 20, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Among those signing NCAA letters of intent last week were (top photo, from left) Hannah Burgess, Abbey Saunders, Emily Ramier, Annika Grewal and Lauren Lalumiere, (middle photo, from left) Jaelyne Kirkpatrick and Julia Chandler, and (bottom photo) Tori Gorrell. | Venom photo by Michael Ivanin -- Special to the Beaver; other photos submitted be part of since she won a Halton elementary school volleyball title with the Pilgrim Wood Dolphins in Grade 6.
