And she doesn't seem to have stopped. "She is like a radio station. You don't even have to change the channel, she sings all day long," said Derek Quinlan. The Grade 5 St. Joan of Arc Elementary School student is taking that nonstop voice to the nals of the Hidden Talent Toronto competition Nov. 21. The vocal competition is open to singers of all ages. Sydney, 10, waited in line for six hours for the rst round of auditions in September. She was one of 60 singers to earn a place in the preliminary auditions in October. Sydney practised Let it Go with three other competitors; they had to perform the song as a group for the judges. Three of those singers including Sydney and Myriam Ixchebell Suarez Martinez, also from Oakville made it to the semi nal. At the semi nal, Sydney sang a song from Matilda The Musical. For the nal on Nov. 21, she has to perform two songs for the judges. "It feels really good. I didn't know I would make it this far," said Sydney. "I only started competing this year and only started with my vocal coach this year.. This fall, Sydney placed second in her age group at the Ancaster Fair's singing competition. She has studied musical theatre for four years at Stage It Performing Arts Studio in Oakville and this year, she will play Jane in the school's production of Mary Poppins. Sydney also plays rep soccer for the Oakville Soccer Club and takes piano lessons. Her vocal coach is Jennifer Tung of the Royal Conservatory of Music. "This is really fun to do," she says. "I really want to be a singer when I grow up. " HELPING CANADA MAKE... What the world needs. Canada's pipelines safely deliver energy Canadian's use to make the products we trade with the world.
