www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 13, 2014 | 38 Finding sound sleep in a `really, really cool' place That's M Life y wife has been giving me the cold shoulder. And apparently there have been nights when, in return, I've given her the old icy feet. Alas, before you start thinking that there are problems in paradise, I should explain that her cold shoulder and my icy feet are all a part of a master plan -- a scheme that has both our backing and the support of science. Allow me to explain. My wife started having troubles sleeping. This was unusual, an anomaly in a life spent easily and instantly falling asleep, and subsequently sleeping like a log through the night, regardless of any chaos and clamor around her. I swear this woman could sleep through a herd of drunk hippos line-dancing on the bed. Conversely, I've always slept so-so, at best. Well, one night, my wife went to bed and discovered that she'd misplaced the magic ability to effortlessly socialize with the Sand Man. Suddenly, she was experiencing dif culties dropping off, failing to sleep through the night, and enduring prolonged periods of staring at the ceiling and wondering if she'd ever get back to sleep. Andy Juniper Guest Contributor Hey, honey, welcome to my world. Well, she was having none of that. No one messes with my wife's sleep. So, we did some Internet research, which people in this day of hyper-curiosity and over-information are wont to do, and discovered that one secret to a good night's sleep is climate control. That is, bedroom temperature. According to assorted experts, the ideal temperature for optimum sleep is somewhere between 15-19 C. And, to think, we'd been keeping our bedroom at 21 C. So, we started tinkering with the thermostat, dropping it by a degree each night until things were quite frosty in the bedroom and we were both... sleeping soundly. I could offer up the whole sweet science behind this miracle of sound sleep, but science tends to put people to sleep -- wait, if you don't like a cold bedroom, perhaps just think science-y thoughts before bed. Anyway, the science works. Cold bedroom equals better sleep. I will say, there are occasional nights when we wonder whether the better sleep is worth it. Nights when we awaken above the covers and worry that we may well have frostbite, frozen esh, a cold shoulder here, old icy feet there. Nights when outdoor temps dip and we worry we may experience a frost quake: indoors. Nights when our eyes water or our noses run and we wake up and nd ourselves frozen to the pillow. Yeah, there are downsides. Take the dog. The poor pooch used to sleep in his little bed right by our bedroom window, which is right by a heater vent. He used to revel in that heat, warm and toasty in his bed. A hot dog, as it were. Well, nowadays the vent's not spewing hot air, the window's open wide, and the hot dog is frozen. But mostly it's all good now that we've found the secret to sound sleep, this salve for insomniacs. And how cool is that? Actually, it ain't cool at all. It's ridiculously cold. But it works. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www.facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/thesportjesters.
